Die „Geschichte der Universität Unter den Linden“ analysiert die Biographie der Institution seit 1810 (Bände 1-3) und die Praxis der universitären Disziplinen (Bände 4-6). Auch nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg galt die Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität als die bedeutendste Hochschule Deutschlands. Ihre internationale Reputation hatte indes während des Krieges erheblich gelitten und nahm seit 1933 unter dem Zugriff des NS-Staates weiter ab. Der Band führt durch die Geschichte der Universität von 1918 bis 1945. Er belegt intensiv, wie in der Weimarer Republik ein zunehmend republikfeindlicher Lehrkörper und eine Studentenschaft, die lange vor 1933 mehrheitlich dem Nationalsozialismus anhing, am Untergang der Republik und an der Zerstörung der akademischen Freiheit mitwirkten. Die Autoren analysieren die Machtübernahme und die Massenentlassungen unter der Herrschaft der Nationalsozialisten ebenso wie die Veränderung der Universitätsstruktur, den Wandel im Lehrkörper und in der Studentenschaft sowie die Mitwirkung zahlreicher Wissenschaftler an der Politik des Dritten Reiches. Bei seinem Zusammenbruch hinterließ das NS-Regime eine Studentenschaft, die schlecht ausgebildet, politisch desorientiert und oft physisch beschädigt war, eine Dozentenschaft, die sich moralisch vielfach kompromittiert hatte, und eine Universität, deren Gebäude zu großen Teilen in eine Trümmerlandschaft verwandelt worden waren.
