Im Zeitraum zwischen den beiden apostrophierten "konfessionellen Zeitaltern" (1648-1800) entstanden auf dem Boden des Alten Reichs sich voneinander abgrenzende Konfessionskulturen. Eine Analyse von Reiseberichten aus dem exemplarisch gewählten Gebiet des Mittelrheintals gibt Einblick in die Genese wechselseitiger Wahrnehmungs- und Bewertungsmuster dieser Kulturen und der damit verbundenen Prozesse von Selbstvergewisserung und -darstellung.
