Freiwilliges Engagement kann ganz wesentlich zur Teilhabe Älterer an der Gesellschaft beitragen, es ist aber in hohem Ausmaß sozial strukturiert. Im Beitrag wird untersucht, welche sozialen und regionalen Ungleichheiten im freiwilligen Engagement von Personen ab 50 Jahren bestehen. Datenbasis ist der Deutsche Freiwilligensurvey (FWS) 1999 und 2009. Im Ergebnis zeigen sich deutliche Effekte beispielsweise von Erwerbsstatus, Bildung, Geschlecht und subjektiver finanzieller Lage auf die Wahrscheinlichkeit sich freiwillig zu engagieren. Darüber hinaus sind Ältere in wirtschaftlich schwachen Regionen deutlich seltener engagiert als Ältere in wirtschaftlich stärkeren Gebieten. Dabei kumulieren sich Benachteiligungen, wenn geringe individuelle Ressourcen und schlechte ökonomische Rahmenbedingungen zusammentreffen. Eine Förderung der sozialen Teilhabe Älterer sollte daher auch darauf abzielen, die Infrastruktur für Engagement auf kommunaler Ebene zu stärken und Barrieren für ökonomisch benachteiligte Personengruppen abzubauen.
