Mit dem Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs setzte für die aus dem nationalsozialistischen Machtbereich Geflüchteten eine neue Phase der Bedrohung ein. In den Ländern, die ihnen bislang Schutz gewährt hatten, wurden sie nun zu »feindlichen Ausländern«.Die Beiträge diskutieren unterschiedliche Handlungs- und Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten für einen Neuanfang in der gewaltsam veränderten Lebenssituation. Sie zeigen zahlreiche Versuche Exilierter, mit publizistischen, künstlerischen und wissenschaftlichen Mitteln über die faschistische Politik und die NS-Verbrechen aufzuklären, auf Seiten der Alliierten zu kämpfen und sich an den Diskursen um die Neuordnung einer zukünftigen Welt zu beteiligen. Zudem plädieren sie - auch aus aktuellem Anlass - für einen Perspektivenwechsel: Flüchtlinge dürfen nicht als hilflose Opfer stigmatisiert werden.
