Content: During the past 20 years, there have been significant developments in the area of offender assessment. As a result, this knowledge has placed the field in a position to construct guidelines as to what should characterize useful and effective offender assessment instruments. The author?s suggestions as to what constitutes good assessment ranges from the noncontroversial (e.g., actuarial instruments) to the more contentious (e.g., lessening one?s reliance on static risk scales). Whether the reader agrees with the views expressed, it is hoped that the force of the empirical arguments will at least provoke some careful consideration rather than summarily dismissing them.

Content: The present investigation reports upon various aspects of incarceration within a jail setting. In the first study, variables that were associated with the occurrence of institutional misconducts were documented by comparing a group of inmates committing misconducts with inmates having no history of misconducts. A number of personal and demographic differences were observed between the groups, but no relationship between crowding and the occurrence of a misconduct was found. The second study investigated the effect of incarceration and sentencing upon the inmates' anxiety level. Sixty-one inmates formed four groups varying on two independent variables: pretest and sentence. Significant effects due to incarceration and sentencing were absent.

Content: Paulus and Dzindolet (1993) presented evidence that they argued supports a two-component model of the effects of incarceration. Prison life, in their model, includes both constancy and variability, with each of these components having different effects on the individual. However, the separation of these two components at the theoretical and methodological levels is problematic. We conclude that their data can just as readily support other theoretical accounts of the effects of imprisonment without facing the difficulties posed by the two-component model.
