Inhalt: "Many Americans have no idea that Pearl Harbor was not Japan's sole target, or that Japan's coordinated attacks hit the imperial possessions of western nations scattered across the broad reach of the Pacific Ocean. In this collection of original essays, the contributors look again at the great cataclysm of that monumental day -- December 7, from the American perspective; December 8 on the other side of the International Date Line -- to assess its impact from an angle different than usual. While not ignoring the strategic military meaning of the attacks or the domestic political impact of the attacks on the major belligerents, they focus on how Japan's great -- if short-lived -- victories roiled the Pacific world. Collectively, they analyze the impact of the attacks Japan launched that day -- on O'ahu, of course, but also on the Philippines, Malaya, Guam, Wake Island, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand. These attacks and their aftermath, if seen as interconnected, expose broader historical patterns. They reveal the arc of imperialism, colonialism, and burgeoning nationalism in the Pacific world; they demonstrate the transformation of racial solidarities and racial identities within and across Pacific world societies; and they show how a variety of elite actors incorporated the attacks into new regimes of knowledge and expertise that challenged and displaced prior disciplinary hierarchies. In the contributors' analysis, the attacks of December 7/8 belong to a story of clashing empires and anti-colonial visions -- a story told from multiple perspectives"--

Inhalt: "Despite the worldwide renown and popularity of Yosemite National Park, few people know that its first stewards were drawn from the so-called Old Army. From 1890 until the establishment of the National Park Service in 1916, these soldiers proved to be extremely competent and farsighted wilderness managers. Meyerson recaptures the forgotten history of these early environmentalists and shows how their work countered the army's Indian-fighting image and set significant standards for the future oversight of our national parks. This expanded paperback edition contains a foreword by Beth Bailey introducing the book to a new audience and explaining its importance to the field of military history. In his new preface, Meyerson discusses the book's origin and reception, provides a wealth of information on how the Army during this period sought to define its identity and purpose, and talks about the twenty-first-century National Park Service and how Yosemite ranger Shelton Johnson has almost single-handedly "rescued the army's role in the national parks from an obscure corner of history" by introducing park visitors and many others to the role of the African American soldiers who served in the park-troops of the Buffalo Soldiers, 9th Cavalry."--

Inhalt: "By the Tet Offensive in early 1968, what had been widely heralded as the best qualified, best-trained army in US history was descending into crisis as the Vietnam War raged without end. Morale was tanking. AWOL rates were rising. And in August of that year, a group of Black soldiers seized control of the infamous Long Binh Jail, burned buildings, and beat a white inmate to death with a shovel. The days of 'same mud, same blood' were over, and by the end of the decade, a new generation of Black GIs had decisively rejected the slights and institutional racism their forefathers had endured. Acclaimed military historian Beth Bailey shows how the Army experienced, defined, and tried to solve racism and racial tension (in its own words, 'the problem of race') in the Vietnam War era. Some individuals were sympathetic to the problem but offered solutions that were more performative than transformational, while others proposed remedies that were antithetical to the army's fundamental principles of discipline, order, hierarchy, and authority. Bailey traces a frustrating yet fascinating arc where the army initially rushed to create solutions without taking the time to fully identify the origins, causes, and proliferation of racial tension. It was a difficult, messy process, but only after Army leaders ceased viewing the issue as a Black issue and accepted their own roles in contributing to the problem did change become possible"--
