    Abstract: This study deals with the improving students’ achievement in reading narrative text by using reciprocal teaching. The research of this study was conducted by using action research. The subject of this study was the tenth grade students SMA Negeri 6 Medan. One class was taken as the subject, namely the students from X-5. There were 49 students, consisting of 22 male and 27 female. This research was done in two cycles; there was three meetings in cycle I and three meetings in cycle II. The instruments for collecting data were reading narrative text (25 items of multiple choice tests) teacher make test as quantitative data and interview sheet, observation sheet and diary notes as qualitative data. In analyzing the data, the mean of the students’ score for the treatment I was 61.79, for the treatment II was 72.24 and treatment III was 81.71. The data showed that the students’ score was rising in every treatment. The conclusion is that the use of reciprocal teaching method can improve students’ reading comprehension in narrative text. It suggested to English teacher to apply reciprocal teaching method in teaching reading comprehension. Key words: reading, narrative text, reciprocal teaching.

    Abstract: This research deals with developing writing materials about descriptive text through facebook group for eight grade junior high school. The research was conducted to examine the initial condition of students before using the descriptive text materials developed through FB and to develop the materials through FB for the teaching descriptive text. This research was conducted at SMP Swasta Jambi Medan. This research was conducted by using Research and Development design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, developing materials and media, validating by expert, revising, and final product. The subject of this research was eight grade of SMP Swasta Jambi Medan. The data were gathered by reviewing documents, conducting interview to English Teacher, and distributing questioner to eight grade consist of 26 students to get the students’ need. The interview and questioner result prove that the students need interesting materials about descriptive text and media. The developed writing materials was validated by expert which average score 3,5 show that the writing materials are valid and suitable to use for grade eight SMP Swasta Jambi Medan. The result of the product distributed to the students through Facebook.Key words: Development, Writing Materials, Facebook.

    Abstract: This study aimed to develop Video Blog as Teaching Media for Students of Multimedia Programme. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D).Instruments for collecting data were syllabus, questionnaire and interview. The data was gathered by administering interview to the teacher and distributing questionnaires to the students. The result of this study was developed Video Blog   which contained explanation, students’ activities and the example of report text in spoken.The average scores of media’s assesment were 4.04 from English teacher and 4.56 from English lecturer. It means the developed Video Blog as Teaching Media were categorized as very good or very appropriate for students of Multimedia Programme.  Key words: Report text, Research and Development (R & D), Report Text

    Abstract: Discussion of metaphor is also widely associated with proverbs. This is not surprising because metaphor is a part of figure of speech in literary theory. The aim of this research was to find out the reasons of metaphor realized in BBAJ Proverb in the way they are. Thinking and creating metaphors that human cannot escape from their environtment, because they always interact with it. The study of interactions between humans and their environment (animate and inanimate beings) is called an ecological study systemThe data sources of this research were 5 people. They are the descendants of native speakers who first lived in the village of Sabungan Julu. The research is a kind of qualitative descriptive. The data of the research focus on phrase, which contain of metaphor on BBAJ Proverb, the technique of collecting data that is used in the research is collecting or listing proverbs from Bahasa Batak Angkola Julu. From some process of communication the researcher has been listed any proverbs based on the context of interaction and communication. The results of this research as the reason of the using metaphor, the BBAJ’s Proverb used depends on the social and cultural environtment shows their identity . Results of the reason of using metaphor in BBAJ Proverb are, the microsmos reason is the most prominent reason where the percentage distribution is 52,5% while the macrocosmos reason is 47,5 %. There  is a proverb which has two reason of using metaphor in BBAJ Proverb, both macrocosmos and microsmos. The proverb is halak na lilu di alaman /pae sobanan.  From the result it can be concluded that the reason for the creation of metaphors in BBAJ Proverb is more dominated by the culture, customs, mindset and habits of the Angkola Julu people themselves (microcosmos) rather than the geographical conditions of their natural environment (macrocosmos). Keywords: Metaphor, Bahasa Batak Angkola Julu (BBAJ) Proverb, the Reason of the Using Metaphor

    Abstract: This study was aimed at examining the Silence of students in EFL Classroom. The objectives of this study were to find out the types and the reason of silence is used by students in Industry Engineering. This study was conducted by descriptive qualitative method. The source of data was recording and interview. The technique of data collection was recording and interview. The technique of data analysis was interactive model by Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). The findings of the study showed that: ATDS students in EFL classroom just uses 9 types out of 12 types of silence.     Abstract: This study investigated code mixing in cross-cultural communication of Junior High School students of Al Kautsar. The objectives of the study namely: 1) To identify types of code-mixing that used in cross-cultural communication. 2) To find out the function of code-mixing used in cross-cultural communication. 3) To identify types of socio-cultural meaning that used in cross-cultural communication.4) To elaborate the main reasons of code-mixing used in cross-cultural communication. This research was conducted by descriptive qualitative research. The participants were 10 students in different ethnic. The data were students’ utterances in different ethnic that have taken from school environment. The findings showed that several types of code mixing, i.e. word insertion, phrase insertion, clause insertion, and tag mixing occured in cross-cultural communication. Word insertion is dominantly mixed by the students in daily conversation. The function of code mixing in cross-cultural communication namely as; 1) communication strategy, 2) expression personality or community, 3) style. And there were some types of socio-cultural meaning in cross-cultural communication, they are:1) a unique group solidarity, 2) a special register, 3) self esteem. And the main reasons of using code mixing in cross-cultural communication were: 1) being emphatic something (express solidarity. 2) interjection. 3) expressing group identity 4) and to soften or strengthen request or command.     Abstract: The objectives of this study are to investigate the way the bilingual families decide their own language policy through the components of language policy, the way the parents apply language policy to succeed their children words production, and to find out the factors why the parents apply the language policy the way they are. This research applied qualitative approach by phenomenology term through observation, questionnaire and in–depth interview. The research findings showed that bilingual families use the components of language policy namely language ideology, language practice and language management. Mostly parents considered language ideology and language management. Otherwise, language practice were not applied by them completely, it can be seen through language that their children use will be different with what the parents have expected. Language policy is applied in family by practicing the language directly. There are some influences that make the parents practice the language directly, namely: influences of outside home and there is no balance guidance of practicing language between mother and father. Factors that support parents in conducting language policy are intermarriage, maintaining the language particularly tribal language, the position of language using in formal context such as school and the position of language which is used in their environment.   Keywords: Bilingual families; Language policy; and Word Production.

    Abstract: This study deals with the types of politeness strategies on social media: Facebook posts and Twitter, according to Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory. This research is included in the type of descriptive qualitative research. To answer questions in the research, the author took 30 Facebook posts and Twitter data according to Creswell's (2009) theory, namely by downloading posts from Facebook and Twitter randomly with the theme of Covid-19. Then the data was condensed, displayed and verified conclusion drawn. The results of this study found that there were 5 types of positive politeness strategies and 6 negative politeness strategies. The positive sub strategies are: making offer, showing a sense of optimism, involving the interlocutor and speaker in a certain activities , giving and asking for reasons, and expector demand reciprocity. while the negative politeness strategies include: indirect expression), using fences, stating FTA as a general social, stating clearly that the speaker has given goodness.

    Abstract: The aims of this study were to find out the kinds of figures of speech in surah Ar-Rahman, and to investigate realization of figures of speech in surah Ar-Rahman. The research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data of this study were 78 verses of surah Ar –Rahman. Besides, Miles, Huberman’s, and Saldana’s analysis applied in this study. In addition, Keraf theory (2004) was used in this study to find out kinds of figures of speech in surah Ar-Rahman, and Arp and Perrine theory (1963) was applied to investigate realization of figures of speech in surah Ar-rahman. The results of this study were (1) There were 10 kinds figures of speech in surah Ar-Rahman namely 3 Simile 2 Personifications 1 Apophasis 31 Repetition 2 Paralellism 1 Apostrophe  2 Pleonasm 1 Prolepsis 1 Antonomasia 1 Tautology (2) In realization figures of speech in surah Ar-rahman . ways in figures of speech in surah Ar-Rahman namely explicitly, comparing things, noun, repetition, synonym, denial, redundancy, substitution, and future.     Abstract: The research deals with translation shift in Garfield takes his licks a bilingual text. The objectives of the study were: (1) to find out the types of shifts in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text, (2) to describe how the shifts occur in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text, (3) to analyze the reasons why translation shifts occur in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were words, phrases, and clauses were translated from English into Indonesian. The data were collected through documentary technique. The technique of data analysis was interactive model. The findings of this study revealed that: (1) The category shifts in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text are 1) structure shift, 2) class shift, 3) unit shift, 4) intra system shift, and 5) double types of shift. (2) There were some ways of translation shift used in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text, namely grammatical change occurred, change in different word class, change in ranks and change in number. (3) There were four reasons of using translation shifts are (1) Different language systems, (2) Grammatical structures of SL do not exist in TL, (3) Literal translation is grammatically possible but may not accord with natural usage in the TL (naturalness between SL and TL) and (4) replacing virtual gap by grammatical structure.Keywords: Structure Shift, Class Shift, Unit Shift, Intra System Shift.
