Content: Peacemaking in practice -- Toward an inclusive peacemaking -- New directions in peacemaking -- Interpreting peacemaking
Content: The field of conflict resolution has expanded in the last few decades, with more and more university degree programs, more certifications, and a growing specialized literature. Where is the content coming from that drives these developments? A strong current in the field builds understanding by reflecting on practice. Peacemaking is valued for its real world impact and also studied as a way of learning peacemaking. This volume contributes to that trajectory. Part I presents the practice of peacemaking as diversely as it can be conveyed through the written word. The chapters are not a substitute for engaging in peacemaking. Nor are the chapters a substitute for observing directly the fullness of experience of real world peacemaking. Rather, the chapters here present reflections of peacemaking as it is enacted today. Part II seeks to recover the earlier tradition of sharing epitomized by Howard Thurman's voyage to India. Recognizing that peacemaking is a common language that draws on deep wisdom from within all societies, the authors look for traditions and experiences that can inform and broaden our conception of peacemaking. In keeping with the emphasis in these volumes to focus on peacemaking as an organic, bottom-up practice, contributors not only address textual sources, but also demonstrate how these living traditions continue to influence the practice of actual peacemakers. Part III confirms that peace is made continuously and in very daring circumstances, it is associated with innovation and creativity and can be analyzed further through a rigorous and systematic practice-to-theory process. Part IV is dedicated to interpreting peacemaking. The perspective is intentionally interdisciplinary and moves away from the narrow focus on official institutions and formal processes that dominates analyses of peacemaking and offers a more organic understanding of its true nature and potential. Just as humans could communicate before understanding linguistic theory, the study of peacemaking must begin with the recognition that humans have always been peacemakers. In this way, a more effective approach toward understanding peacemaking should take, as a starting point, the lived experiences of those engaged in seeking peaceful resolutions to violent disputes
