Content: Oscar Parkes's monumental study of the British battleship was first published in 1957, but has long been out of print. A new generation of naval historians having grown up in the years that have elapsed, it was felt that it should once again be made available. Although the big-gun capital ship is now a thing of the past and the command of the seas has assumed an altogether different aspect in the world political scene, the great armoured ships of the line still fire the imagination and seize the technical interest of all sealoving men. The history they have written in battle, the influence they have wielded in international affairs in peace and war, and the fascinating study of the development of their design assure them a permanent place in the history of our island race. It was said when Dr Parkes's book was published that no such history had ever before been attempted and this is as true today. It remains the final word on the subject, a book that can never be superseded. The sources from which it is drawn are principally the Official Returns, Admiralty Ships Covers, Progress Books and the personal notes and confidences of a number of Directors of Naval Construction. The large number of photographs came from the author's collection amassed over the years; the ships' plans have never before been equalled; throughout, previously unpublished information is provided and details of all vessels are compared with those of their foreign rivals.
