Das in der 10-bändigen "Geschichte Europas" (zuletzt B. Schneidmüller: ID-B 22/11) erschienene Werk des Trierer Neuhistorikers (zuletzt BA 3/04) charakterisiert die spannungsgeladene Epoche zwischen 1914 und 1945 als Zäsur in der europäischen Geschichte, geprägt von imperialem Machtstreben und nationaler Mobilisierung. Gemeinsamkeiten ebenso wie Unterschiede in der Entwicklung der europäischen Staaten benennend, schildert Raphael auf aktuellem Forschungsstand in anspruchsvoll-analytischer, dabei klar gegliederter und gut lesbarer Darstellung die Konflikte und Verwerfungen in einer Zeit, die im Zeichen zweier Weltkriege und aufkommender Diktaturen stand. Zugleich machten epochale Neuentwicklungen in Wissenschaft, Kultur und Gesellschaft Europa zum "Labor der Moderne". Anmerkungen am Schluss (die zur Einleitung fehlen!), einige Abbildungen, Chronik, Personen- und Ortsregister, annotierte Literaturhinweise mit Verweis auf eine Web-Bibliografie.
