Kapitalvereinigungen dienen der Finanzierung von Vorhaben, die wegen ihres Umfangs, ihrer Dauer oder ihres Risikos die finanzielle Leistungsfähigkeit einzelner Personen übersteigen. Bereits in der Antike haben Kapitalvereinigungen (wie die societas, die societas publicanorum oder das peculium mehrerer Personen) wirtschaftliche Unternehmungen finanziert. Aber sie waren seltener und kleiner, als viele Forscher bislang vermutet haben. Hieraus ergeben sich weitreichende Konsequenzen für das Verständnis der antiken Sozialverfassung. Zugleich muß die ideengeschichtlich bedeutsame Vorstellung verworfen werden, die moderne Aktiengesellschaft habe antike Grundlagen
