Dieses wurde aus den Anfangsbuchstaben der hebräischen Ortsnamen - Schpira, Warmaisa, Magenza - gebildet. Die Ausstrahlung der SchUM-Gemeinden, die Bedeutung ihrer Gelehrten und Lehrhäuser sowie die vielfältigen Traditionen, die sich mit Ihnen verbinden, begründen den einzigartigen Rang der drei Gemeinden für das aschkenasische Judentum. - - Von ganz außergeöhnlicher Bedeutung sind die materiellen Überreste, die in den drei SchUM-Städten erhalten geblieben sind oder wieder sichtbar gemacht wurden: in Speyer insbesondere der Judenhof mit Synagoge und Mikwe, in Worms der "Heilige Sand", der älteste jüdische Friedhof Europas, sowie die 1938 zerstörte und 1968 wieder aufgebaute Synagoge und die Mikwe, in Mainz der "Denkmalfriedhof"
