Auch mehr als sechs Jahrzehnte nach ihrem Entstehen haben Schlager wie „Kann denn Liebe Sünde sein?“ nichts von ihrer Faszination eingebüßt. Vergessen ist aber weitgehend der geschichtliche Hintergrund, vor dem diese populären Evergreens entstanden sind. Im Nationalsozialismus kam gerade der anspruchslos-heiteren Musik eine besondere Bedeutung zu. Vor allem seit dem Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurde die Unterhaltungsmusik als Ablenkungs- und Entspannungsmittel eingesetzt. Für Propagandaminister Goebbels war sie „genau so wichtig wie Kanonen und Gewehre“. Sie bildete über das „Wunschkonzert für die Wehrmacht“ des „Großdeutschen Rundfunks“ eine Brücke zwischen den Soldaten an der Front und deren Angehörigen in der Heimat. Das Buch Kochs widmet sich dem Rundfunk als neuem Medium, das die Nationalsozialisten für ihre Propaganda einzusetzen verstanden, den Komponisten, Textern und Interpreten jener Schlager, die ihre Karriere oft bis in die Gegenwart fortsetzen konnten, und ausgewählten Liedbeispielen wie „Lili Marleen“ oder Optimismus verbreitenden Schlagern wie „Ich weiß, es wird einmal ein Wunder gescheh’n“.
