Immer wieder hat sich Lea Rosh, die streitbare Fernsehjournalistin, in Filmen, Dokumentationen und Talkshows unbeirrbar mit dem Unbegreiflichen jüngster deutscher Geschichte auseinandergesetzt, mit Opfern und Tätern. Ihre bisher umfangreichste Spurensuche auf der dunklen Seite europäischer Vergangenheit, die in Hitlers Verantwortung lag, hat sie zusammen mit dem Historiker Professor Eberhard Jäckel unternommen. Nach mehrjährigen Recherchen und Dreharbeiten entstanden vier Fernsehfilme à 90 Minuten zum Thema Deportation und Ermordung der Juden in Europa. Der Millionenmord an den europäischen Juden erstreckte sich auf etwa 17 Länder. Dem zum Teil in Extreme ausschlagenden Pendel von Mitwirkung und Verweigerung in den jeweiligen Ländern, ablesbar an unterschiedlichsten Todesraten - in Dänemark fanden 1 Prozent der dort lebenden Juden den Tod, in Polen und den Niederlanden 80 Prozent -, und dem Warum geht diese Dokumentation nach, ohne dabei natürlich die deutsche Urheberschaft zu verschweigen. Schauplätze sind 12 beispielhafte Länder: Sowjetunion, Polen, Rumänien, Niederlande, Belgien, Frankreich, Italien, Norwegen, Ungarn, Bulgarien, Österreich und Rhodos. Die vier Filme sind Grundlage und roter Faden dieses Buches, ergänzt durch eine Fülle zusätzlichen Materials - Interviews mit Überlebenden, Eindrücke und Erlebnisse. Die zeitgeschichtlichen Einführungen von Eberhard Jäckel, in denen die Besonderheiten der einzelnen Länder in der damaligen Situation von Krieg und Besatzung dargestellt werden, machen die unterschiedlichen Verhaltensweisen von Staat und Bevölkerung erklärbar. Ein Begleitbuch also zu erschütternden Filmen und eine eigenständige Dokumentation, wie sie noch nicht dagewesen ist. Ein Buch auch, in dem persönliche Töne der beiden Autoren mitschwingen, ihre Betroffenheit, Scham, Wut und Trauer an den Orten des Geschehens. Nicht von ungefähr haben sie als Motto die berühmte Zeile aus Celans Todesfuge gewählt: "Der Tod ist ein Meister aus Deutschland."
