Ganz unangefochten galt Georg Friedrich Puchta (1798-1846) lange Zeit als der "Begründer der klassischen Begriffsjurisprudenz des 19. Jahrhunderts" (Wieacker). In der methodengeschichtlichen Literatur stehen hierfür die Schlagworte "Begriffspyramide" und "Inversionsmethode". In seiner Habilitationsschrift nimmt Haferkamp die in neuerer Zeit auftauchenden Zweifel an diesem Bild auf und legt eine erste umfassende Untersuchung dieser Zusammenhänge vor. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit werden verschiedene 'Puchtabilder' in ihrem Entstehungskontext rekonstruiert. Das daraus gewonnene Analyseraster bringt fünf Typen des 'Begriffsjuristen' Puchta und darin sieben Perspektiven und damit verbundene Vorwürfe gegen Puchtas Jurisprudenz. Im zweiten Teil wird Puchtas Methodenprogramm in seinem Kontext beleuchtet. Dabei werden bisher unbekannte Veröffentlichungen Puchtas und unveröffentlichte Briefe, insbesondere an Hugo, Savigny und Blume ausgewertet. Neben abstrakter Programmatik wird ergänzend auch die konkrete Verwendung dieser Konzepte am juristischen Einzelproblem in den Blick genommen. Völlig neue Ergebnisse ergaben sich insbesondere zu Puchtas Juristenrecht, zur Entwicklung seines Systemdenkens, zum signifikanten Einfluss der Münchener Vorlesungen Schellings, zum politischen Hintergrund und zu den Einflüssen dieser Ausgangsüberlegungen auf Puchtas Pandekten. Im dritten Teil werden diese Ergebnisse mit dem Analyseraster aus Teil 1 in ein Gespräch gebracht. Vom 'Begriffsjuristen' Puchta bleibt dabei nicht viel.
