Inhalt: Works such as those of the mime-writer Publilius Syrus, who flourished c. 45 BCE, and Rutilius Namatianus, who gave a graphic account of his voyage from Rome to Gaul in 416 CE, represent the wide variety of theme that lends interest to Latin poetry produced during a period of four and a half centuries, This two-volume anthology of Latin poetry covers a period of four and a half centuries, beginning with the work of the mime-writer Publilius Syrus, who flourished ca. 45 BCE, and ending with the graphic and charming poem of Rutilius Namatianus recording a sea voyage from Rome to Gaul in 416 CE. A wide variety of theme gives interest to the poems: hunting in a poem of Grattius; an inquiry into the causes of volcanic activity by the author of Aetna; pastoral poems by Calpurnius Siculus and by Nemesianus; fables by Avianus; a collection of Dicta, moral sayings, as if by the elder Cato; eulogy in Laus Pisonis; and the legend of the Phoenix, a poem of the fourth century. Other poets complete the edition

Inhalt: "The paper of Herman von Helmholtz to the translation of which this work is devoted, stands historically in the midst of a stream of speculation which today has progressed far beyond its original mathematical bounds and has become an active force in some of the most fundamental thought of modern physics. It is fitting, therefore, as an introduction to the speculations of Helmholtz on "Counting and Measuring" to survey briefly the background of present-day mathematical and physical foundations and to indicate the measure of advance which philosophers in these sciences believe they have achieved. The subject of number and its relationship to the description of nature possesses both ontological and epistemological aspects. It is in part psychological and in part philosophical. Basic tenets may often be reduced to questions of preference in belief since there is frequently and perhaps always no categorical necessity for choice between the systems of postulates employed. If we seek to classify what might be called the psychological elements which underlie the definition of number given by the philosophers we find that these may be grouped into three types: those which seek to associate number with an a priori intuition of time; those which seek to coordinate the idea of number with space; those which affirm that number is a concept sui generis and is related only secondarily if at all to time and space"--Introduction. Inhalt: "The present volume remains close to educational topics, after presenting in an untraditional way, in Part I, such general psychological principles as seem specifically to underlie the processes of teaching and learning. It would be an advantage if educational psychology could cease to be an assemblage of miscellaneous and unrelated topics, so that prospective teachers might come to view their work in at least as unified and systematic a way as the facts justify. The present text is written in the conviction that the human mind is really coherent; that the principles of learning and teaching are actually simple and capable of intelligible generalization, on the basis of observed facts. It is believed that the main principles of cue reduction, scope or control, motivation, and individual differences reviewed in Part I are the fundamental ones for the teacher to know. The application of these principles to all aspects of education ought to assist in bringing the work of teaching and learning from a rule-of-thumb level to a plane inviting artistry and encouraging scientific analysis"--Preface. Inhalt: Select papyri gives a selection of Greek papyri covering a period from before 300 BCE to the eighth century CE. From such papyri we get much information about administration and social and economic conditions in Egypt, and about native Egyptian, Greek, Roman and Byzantine law, as well as glimpses of ordinary life. Also included are papyri relating to public business of various kinds in Egypt, including affairs in that country first when it was ruled by the Greek Ptolemaic kings, secondly when it was a Roman province. The earliest examples date from the reign of King Ptolemy II Philadelphus and the latest from the government by the Arabs after their conquest of Egypt in 639–641 CE. The papyri found in Egypt and included here have also yielded fragments large and small of ancient literary authors.

Inhalt: In approaching the contents of this book, the reader must not expect to find society or social groups considered as if they consisted of the sum of the individuals composing them. Wherever two or more people are functioning as a social group that group not only consists of those individuals, but, more important perhaps, if that is possible, than the individuals themselves and without which their functioning as a social group cauld not be expressed, are the relations which maintain between them. It is these intangible, imponderable and invisible aspects of the situation which enable the mathematical sum of a certain number of individuals to function as a social group. Dr. Moreno's book might he described briefly as a study of these relations between individuals. Dr. Moreno develops a technique for a process of classification which is calculated, among other things, to bring individuals together who are capable of harmonious inter-personal relationships, and so creating a social group which can function at the maximum efficiency and with the minimum of disruptive tendencies and processes. Inhalt: "The increasing number of courses offered in Comparative Psychology gives some indication of the importance of the subject. Realizing the need for a satisfactory textbook in this field, a number of men who had been working in Animal Psychology convened at the Cornell meeting of the American Psychological Association and planned an introductory textbook. Each of them prepared independently a suggestive outline for the book as a whole. After studying this outline, a committee selected what appeared to be the most important topics and allocated the assignments among the men according to their specializations. Thereafter each contributor developed his topic in his own way and assumed full responsibility for content, for interpretation of data, and for placement of emphasis. The book is thoroughly documented, so that anyone wishing to go back to the original sources will have no difficulty in so doing. The editor wishes to commend the contributors for their systematic team work in attempting to reduce or eliminate needless repetition of closely related subject matter. There was no effort whatever to curb or to eliminate diverse opinions on controversial subjects; such opinions are omnipresent in rapidly changing subjects, and no student is any the worse for encountering them in his reading at the very outset. Through cooperative efforts, singularly free from the secretive reserve sometimes found among specialists, a book more representative of Comparative Psychology as it is today has been obtained than could reasonably be expected from the hand of a single contributor in this varied and ever-expanding field. Breadth of view and wealth of subject matter more than compensate for a certain lack of unification inevitably present in a work of this kind"--Preface. Inhalt: "This investigation of the relation between the order of birth and the intelligence of children as well as a number of related questions has been carried out on data collected at the Institute for Juvenile Research. A large part of the work was carried out under the auspices of the Behavior Research Fund, and it was completed by some work under the auspices of the Local Community Research Committee of the University of Chicago. The first part is an analysis of our own data, and the second part, for which Dr. Jenkins is chiefly responsible, is a summary of the literature on this and closely related problems. The first part of this study is the work of both authors. The conclusions of this investigation, which indicate a steadily increasing advantage in intelligence in favor of the later-born children, are based upon the Institute population of children. These children come to the Institute usually for some behavior problem, and their mean intelligence quotient is in the vicinity of .80. Although the mean intelligence of our population is lower than the average for the general population, we have seen no very good reason to suspect that this fact would in any way influence our main problem. We have been interested in the relative intelligence of the first-born, the second-born, and the third-born child in each family rather than in the mean intelligence of the whole population. Inhalt: "This volume reports investigations covering a period of three years, dealing with the fundamental facts and forces in learning. It was the author's original purpose to work at certain basic problems until satisfactory solutions were reached; and in general he has done so. But the results suggested certain new problems of such great importance that he has thought it wise to study these also, even without expectation of attaining a final settlement of them. As an indirect consequence of this, one important problem in his original set, that of the relation of the formation of conditional reflexes to associative shifting of the ordinary sort, has been treated only very cursorily".
