Diese Arbeit umfaßt grob den Zeitraum ab dem Börsenzusammenbruch 1929 bis Mitte der 1960er Jahre. Zu dieser Zeit entstanden die wohl typischsten Werke der amerikanischen Oper. Aus einer wirtschaftlich bedrängten Lage waren die amerikanischen Opernkomponisten gezwungen, wirkungsvolle und authentische Werke zu kreieren. Über eine Hochphase während der 1950er Jahre wuchs die amerikanische Oper zu einem globalen Phänomen. Damit verbunden sind Biographien der kreierenden Künstler, die als Idealisten ihre Phantasien und Ideen in lebendige amerikanische Bühnenwerke verwandelten.
