A background in linear algebra and mathematical programming is necessary to understand the book. The detailed proofs and lack of "numerical examples" might suggest that the book is of limited value to the reader interested in the practical aspects of convex optimization, but nothing could be further from the truth. An entire chapter is devoted to potential reduction methods precisely because of their great efficiency in practice

Note: The seventh Ettore Majorana International School of Mathematical Physics was :Jeld at the Centro della Cultura Scientifica Erice. Sicily, 1-15 July 1988. The present volume collects lecture notes on the session which was entitled Con8tructive Quantum Field Theory lI. The II refers to the fact that the first such school in 1973 was devoted ,0 the same subject. The school was a NATO Advanced Study Institute sponsored Jy the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Technological Research and the Regional 3icilian Government. At the time of the 1973 Erice School on Constructive Field Theory, the speakers :ould summarize a decade of effort on the solution of superrenormalizable models in two dimensional space-time leading to the verification of the axioms of relativistic :J. uantum field theory for these examples. The resulting lecture notes have proved ,0 be exceptionally useful and are still in print. In the decade and a half that have ~lapsed since that time, there has been much hard work with the ultimate objective of providing a rigorous mathematical foundation for the quantum field theories in four iimensional space-time that summarize a large fraction of our current understanding )f elementary particle physics: QCD and the electroweak theory. The lecture notes )f the 1988 school record the fact that, although this objective has not been reached, Important progress has been made. The ultraviolet stability of Yang-Mills theory In four dimensions has been treated and renormalizable (not superrenormalizable) models in two dimensional space-time, Gross-Neveu models, have been solved

Note: In this text experts review experimental studies that directly reveal the relationship between the atomic structure and physical behavior of high-Tc superconductors. The thorough discussion centers on twins, twin boundaries, the vortex lattice, and magnetic and mechanical properties in connection with structural imperfections. Particular attention is paid to the role of the oxygen atom in the Y-Ba-Cu-O and La-Cu-O species. The experimental methods evaluated include electron and X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and M|ssbauer spectroscopy. This book makes extraordinarily valuable data obtained at the Institute of Solid State Physics at Chernogolovka accessible to the wider international community of researchers in superconductivity

Note: Along with the traditional optical window, many new windows have been opened on galaxies in the last two decades, made possible by new developments in groundbased detectors and by space missions that allow detection of photons that are otherwise absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere. Galaxies can now be observed in the radio, submillimeter, IR, optical, UV, X- and gamma-ray bands, each window allowing us to learn more about galactic components and properties. These developments have also imposed the view that a deeper understanding of even normal galaxies requires a panchromatic approach, making use of all of the data gathered from the different windows to synthesize a comprehensive physical image of these complex astronomical systems. Windows on Galaxies presents a comprehensive view of galaxies through all the available windows, bringing together both theoretical and experimental approaches in the form of a series of reviews reporting the most recent developments complemented by contributed talks and discussions. TEXT NO. 2 The sixth workshop of the Advanced School of Astronomy examined galaxies through all available wavelength windows. Over the last twenty years, new wavelength windows have been opened in astronomy which have created many new possibilities for the observation of the properties of galaxies. The outcome of the meeting clearly stated that the approach towards the studying of galaxies should be panchromatic. Each window, from radio to gamma-rays, shows different components, and a synthesis of this knowledge presents astronomers with a comprehensive physical image of these astronomical systems: star formation, evolution of galaxies, molecular contents, gas flows, interstellar matter and properties of galaxies in the several wavelength fields are discussed in this volume
