Content: It is essential for the survival of cells to maintain their volume within certain limits: Profound alterations interfere with the integrity of the cell membrane and the cytoskeletal architecture. Cells use various methods to adjust osmotic pressure gradients which in turn govern water movement across cell membranes. The most rapid and efficient means is ion transport across the cell membrane. However, to avoid excessive alterations of intracellular ion concentration, cells additionally employ organic osmolytes for osmoregulation and modify their metabolism, thus generating or disposing osmotically active organic substances. But a given cell uses only part of the cell volume regulatory mechanisms at their disposal: The large repertoire available allows for a selection of those which have the least untoward impact on cell function. The present book is a collection of reviews on the various aspects of cell volume regulation, written by internationally leading experts, and constitutes a valuable addition to the library of those working in the field

Content: Hereditary Peripheral Neuropathies deals with the Charcot-Marie-Tooth group of neuropathies and related primary hereditary neuropathies. The knowledge in this field has grown exponentially during the last ten years. The book is divided into two sections. The first section deals with the clinical presentation, electrophysiological features and differential diagnosis of these disorders as well as with the general biology of the peripheral nerve. The second section gives a detailed account of the known disease entities. The book will be interesting for both the clinician with a special interest in PNS diseases as well as for the researcher.
Note: Includes bibliographical references and index , CONTENTS; General part; 1 Architecture of the peripheral nerve; Approach to the patient with suspected hereditary neuropathy; 2 Clinical evaluation and differential diagnosis; 3 Electrodiagnostic evaluation of hereditary polyneuropathies; 4 Principles of pathology and nerve biopsy; Specific neuropathies, treatment and counseling; 5 Overview of the classification and genetics of hereditary peripheral neuropathies and rare unclassified forms; 6 Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1 (CMT1) and hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsy (HNPP); 7 CMT2, dominant intermediate CMT and CMTX , 8 Distal hereditary motor neuropathies (dHMN)9 Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies (HSAN); 10 Hereditary neuralgic amyotrophy (HNA); 11 Molecular genetic diagnosis of hereditary neuropathies; 12 Genetic counseling; 13 Medical treatment of hereditary neuropathies; 14 Orthopedic aspects in diagnosis, clinical management and therapy of CMT patients; 15 Animal models of hereditary neuropathies; Appendix: genetic testing laboratories and support groups; Subject Index

Content: Human aging is a complex phenomenon. This state-of-the-art book discusses the role of free radicals in aging in different animal models, as well as the relevance of free radicals on age-related diseases and pathological conditions in humans (following an introduction section of the basics and theory of free radicals). In addition, the major interventions trials of antioxidant supplements in age-related disease, cancer and so forth are reviewed and discussed.
Content: Oxidative Stress in Aging: From Model Systems to Human Diseasesdiscusses the role of free radicals in aging in different animal models, as well as the relevance of free radicals on age-related diseases and pathological conditions in humans (following an introduction section of the basics and theory of free radicals). Human aging is a complex phenomenon - not everyone gets the same diseases and dies from the same cause. Accumulating reports implicate the connection between free radicals and various diseases and age-related pathological conditions. Although the causal relationships have not been established, it is necessary to discuss how free radicals are involved in each situation. In addition, the major interventions trials of antioxidant supplements in age-related disease, cancer and so forth are reviewed and discussed.

Content: This book is dedicated to Joachim Jens Hesse, a scholar whose multi-faceted work may be characterised as an attempt at "crossing borders" in several respects. These primarily include fostering interdisciplinary cooperation between law, economics and social sciences, analysing public sector developments in an international and intercultural perspective as well as bridging the "gap" between academia and practical politics. Therefore, the volume deals with a subject that covers these features in an exemplary manner: the interrelationship between nation-state constitutions and their international
