    Content: The second volume of the Catena aurea deutsch presents the East Middle German translation of the Catena aurea super Marcum by Thomas Aquinas. This oeuvre, created in the 14th century, is transmitted in a magnificent manuscript in Torun. This edition contains the most comprehensive compilation of all translations of the Catena aurea known to date. These texts are followed by the copy of a fragment from the close of the 15th century, containing a Bavarian translation of this commentary on St. Mark's Gospel.

    Content: Thomas Aquinas (1224/25-1274) wrote commentaries on the four Gospels by stringing together quotations from the works of Greek and Latin Church Fathers and of later Church writers. Thus a catena (chain) was created, the best-known of all catenae. In the 14th century it was translated into German. Two of the universally treasured magnificent manuscripts with the commentaries on Mark and Luke were considered lost in the last year of the Second World War, but in 1982 they were discovered in Toru?.
