Content: Primary commodities dominate African exports, yet these products are extremely vulnerable to variations in weather conditions, world demand and prices. If the continent is to obtain optimum benefit from the integration and opening of the world economy, this heavy reliance on primary products must be reduced. There is, thus, a new and important role for African countries’ manufacturing industries. The papers in this volume address three important issues: the role of exchange-rate policy in enhancing the competitiveness of African manufactured exports; the steps that can be taken to improve production efficiency; and the role of institutional and structural reforms in promoting competitiveness in manufacturing and in improving Africa’s attractiveness to foreign direct investment. An Epilogue evaluates progress and developments since the conference which gave rise to this volume was held.

Content: Larbi Sadiki and Layla Saleh present extensive local evidence to demonstrate that popular resistance has been a mainstay of modern Tunisia before, during, and after colonialism. Protest makes peoplehood, and peoplehood makes protest: neither is self-contained. The book explores the rich history and diversity of insurrectionary politics in Tunisia from the onset of protests in the 1960s up to the 2011 Arab Spring revolution and beyond, exploring bottom-up activism (hirak) and revolution (thawrah). The six protestscapes presented (unions, student activists, the phosphate uprising, the 2010-11 revolution, Kamour, and football ultras) offer a novel way of examining partial 'moving snapshots' that are crucial to understanding revolution.

Content: This thesis paper will describe and examine the financial governance in the transnational grassroots Chinese non-governmental organizations(NGOs).The study will describe and examine the financial governance's framework and the financial reports & chart of accounts of the Chinese NGOs.In addition, the study will bring out an overall picture of the nature and extent of financial govemance's failure they Chinese NGOs have, and puts forward certain recommendations as a way out for promoting good financial governance in these Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).〈br〉 The study will be done using qualitative questioners that had been filled by the NGOs'employees;mid & high management levels to better understand the daily basis "technical"procedures they use and the wide picture behind these policies &procedures.〈br〉 This paper will focus on the transnational grassroots Chinese NGOs operate within China mainland;the research's sample will be out of the Chinese NGOs with no limitation on the NGOs'location, type or classification, the sector they are working in or the supporting donors.〈br〉 Seeing as the NGOs concept was adopted not so long in China, this research topic is relatively new especially because it examines the financial governance of the transnational grassroots NGOs operate in China mainland, and uses the qualitative research methodology to bring out an overall picture of the nature and extent of financial governance failure the Chinese NGOs have, and puts forward certain recommendations as a way out for promoting good financial governance in the Chinese NGOs;which shall help these NGOs to achieve the long-term sustainability.〈br〉 The main portion of the grassroots Chinese NGOs funds and support is from the government itself, and for these NGOs to achieve long-term sustainability;they need to be independent and relay more on the Chinese citizens(individuals, families and firms)rather than the government or the international foundations, but that is not easy given that the governmental regulations related to NGOs do not promote a good financial governance and the saver shortfall in the stat's agencies personnel who is responsible about following up and reviewing the NGOs work especially their financial governance. So,the only way out to the long-term sustainability is to achieve and maintain the good financial governance internally by the NGOs themselües through their internal policies and procedures.

Series Statement: Crosscurrents: new studies on the Middle East vol. 4
    Uniform Title: Ittiḥād (Haifa, Israel)
Content: This volume seeks to document the development of the Palestinian short story between 1944 and 1967. This particularly significant phase that carried the seeds, from which the short story grew, was greatly influenced by the last years of the British mandate over Palestine in 1944, the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, and the subsequent changes that impacted Palestinian society in this country until the Arabs’ defeat in the Six Day War, 1967.Within the fold of this volume, the reader will find two parts: the first is a general account of the development of the genre of short fiction and the different approaches that characterized it along with a discussion of the language and an examination of the content. The second is an anthology of twenty-five stories published between 1944 and 1967 by Al-Itti?ad, an Israeli Arabic-language daily newspaper
Content: “This significant book monitoring and documenting a critical stage in the history of modern Palestinian literature preserves Palestinian short stories which would have remained kept in old newspaper archives and unexplored corners of ignored libraries. Furthermore, it offers scholars and readers a comprehensive critique of these stories illustrating the circumstances under which these short stories were written and discussing the various literary trends and streams that influenced their artistic structure and contents.”—Mahmoud Ghanayem, Professor of Modern Arabic Literature, Tel Aviv University; Chairman, Arabic Language Academy, Israel

Series Statement: Edinburgh Studies on Diasporas and Transnationalism
Content: Presents groundbreaking research on transnational repression and its effects on diasporas and dissidents in the 21st centuryPresents cutting-edge research by leading experts across political science, sociology, law, digital and area studies on transnational repressionOffers detailed case studies analysis from 10 countries around the world, including Russia, China, Turkey, the Philippines, Egypt, Eritrea and Italy Demonstrates how authoritarian states engage in transnational repression and how such practices affect exiled citizens' rights and their freedoms across the worldProvides recommendations and best practices for scholars, institutions and human rights advocates to better defend diaspora communities and democracies from authoritarian transnational repressionBringing together leading scholars, this volume is the first of its kind to address the growing global phenomenon of transnational repression in a comparative perspective. Authoritarian regimes in places like China, Russia and Saudi Arabia are infamous for cracking down on domestic opposition movements and democracy activists at home. And, in our age of globalisation, migration and technological development, dictators are increasingly able to extend their authoritarian power over their critics abroad. Using tactics that include surveillance, coercion, harassment and physical violence, transnational repression threatens the lives of democracy defenders, the basic rights of diaspora members and the rule of law in host states
