    ISBN: 978-3-318-01014-5
Serie: Contributions to nephrology Vol. 141
Inhalt: The novel discipline of proteomics has experienced a rapid growth in the recent past and has a great potential for the future. Involving several fields, it offers various advantages: The study of proteins on a genomic scale allows to examine a large number of them simultaneously. Moreover, proteomic analysis provides information about post-translational modifications and functions of gene products or proteins that cannot be obtained by genomic analysis. The knowledge thus gained is also important for a better understanding of renal physiology and pathophysiology, to identify disease biomarkers, and to develop new target therapies. This book is the first one that applies the science of proteomics to nephrology: It sets out to give an overview of the discipline, providing detailed background information and outlining scope, advantages, and limitations of proteomics. The second section reviews principles of commonly used proteomic techniques, including sample preparation, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, various types of mass spectrometry, expression proteomics, quantitative proteomics, practical bioinformatics, and clinical proteomics. In the last section, examples and perspectives are provided of how proteomics can be applied to various fields in nephrology, including nephrotoxicity, sodium transport, diabetic nephropathy, renal Fanconi syndrome, IgA nephropathy, physiology of podocytes and mesangial cells, hypertension, urological malignancies, and dialysis. The publication ends with a discussion of biomarker discovery in glomerular diseases and drug discovery.Written by acclaimed experts in both proteomics and nephrology, this truly remarkable book is essential reading for students, residents, fellows, scientists, and nephrologists who are interested in or devoted to research, as well as for general health professionals and clinicians

Inhalt: Applied statisticians in many fields must frequently analyze time to event data. While the statistical tools presented in this book are applicable to data from medicine, biology, public health, epidemiology, engineering, economics, and demography, the focus here is on applications of the techniques to biology and medicine. The analysis of survival experiments is complicated by issues of censoring, where an individual's life length is known to occur only in a certain period of time, and by truncation, where individuals enter the study only if they survive a sufficient length of time or individuals are included in the study only if the event has occurred by a given date. The use of counting process methodology has allowed for substantial advances in the statistical theory to account for censoring and truncation in survival experiments. This book makes these complex methods more accessible to applied researchers without an advanced mathematical background. The authors present the essence of these techniques, as well as classical techniques not based on counting processes, and apply them to data. Practical suggestions for implementing the various methods are set off in a series of Practical Notes at the end of each section. Technical details of the derivation of the techniques are sketched in a series of Technical Notes. This book will be useful for investigators who need to analyze censored or truncated life time data, and as a textbook for a graduate course in survival analysis. The prerequisite is a standard course in statistical methodology.

Inhalt: This is the second edition of this text on logistic regression methods, ori- nally published in 1994. As in the first edition, each chapter contains a presentation of its topic in “lecture-book” format together with objectives, an outline, key formulae, practice exercises, and a test. The “lecture-book” has a sequence of illust- tions and formulae in the left column of each page and a script (i.e., text) in the right column. This format allows you to read the script in conjunction with the illustrations and formulae that highlight the main points, formulae, or examples being presented. This second edition has expanded the first edition by adding five new ch- ters and a new appendix. The five new chapters are Chapter 9. Polytomous Logistic Regression Chapter 10. Ordinal Logistic Regression Chapter 11. Logistic Regression for Correlated Data: GEE Chapter 12. GEE Examples Chapter 13. Other Approaches for Analysis of Correlated Data Chapters 9 and 10 extend logistic regression to response variables that have more than two categories. Chapters 11–13 extend logistic regression to gen- alized estimating equations (GEE) and other methods for analyzing cor- lated response data. The appendix is titled “Computer Programs for Logistic Regression” and p- vides descriptions and examples of computer programs for carrying out the variety of logistic regression procedures described in the main text. The so- ware packages considered are SAS Version 8.0, SPSS Version 10.0, and STATA Version 7.0.

Inhalt: This is the first full-scale one-volume survey of the demographic history of the United States. From the arrival of humans in the Western Hemisphere to the current century, Klein analyzes the basic demographic trends in the growth of the pre-conquest, colonial and national populations. He surveys the origin and distribution of the Native Americans, the post-conquest free and servile European and African colonial populations and the variation in regional patterns of fertility and mortality to 1800. He then explores trends in births, deaths, international and internal migrations in the nineteenth century and compares them with contemporary European developments. The profound impact of historic declines in disease and mortality on the structure of the late twentieth century population is explained. Finally the late twentieth century changes in family structure, fertility and mortality are evaluated for their influence on the evolution of the national population for the 21st century.

Inhalt: The field of econometrics has gone through remarkable changes during the last thirty-five years. Widening its earlier focus on testing macroeconomic theories, it has become a rather comprehensive discipline concemed with the development of statistical methods and their application to the whole spectrum of economic data. This development becomes apparent when looking at the biography of an econometrician whose illustrious research and teaching career started about thirty-five years ago and who will retire very soon after his 65th birthday. This is Gerd Hansen, professor of econometrics at the Christian Albrechts University at Kiel and to whom this volume with contributions from colleagues and students has been dedicated. He has shaped the econometric landscape in and beyond Germany throughout these thirty-five years. At the end of the 1960s he developed one of the first econometric models for the German econ omy which adhered c10sely to the traditions put forth by the Cowles commission.

Inhalt: 1. THE PROBLEM OF CATASTROPHE RISK The risk of large losses from natural disasters in the U.S. has significantly increased in recent years, straining private insurance markets and creating troublesome problems for disaster-prone areas. The threat of mega-catastrophes resulting from intense hurricanes or earthquakes striking major population centers has dramatically altered the insurance environment. Estimates of probable maximum losses (PMLs) to insurers from a mega catastrophe striking the U.S. range up to $100 billion depending on the location and intensity of the event (Applied Insurance Research, 2001).1 A severe disaster could have a significant financial impact on the industry (Cummins, Doherty, and Lo, 2002; Insurance Services Office, 1996a). Estimates of industry gross losses from the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 range from $30 billion to $50 billion, and the attack's effect on insurance markets underscores the need to understand the dynamics of the supply of and the demand for insurance against extreme events, including natural disasters. Increased catastrophe risk poses difficult challenges for insurers, reinsurers, property owners and public officials (Kleindorfer and Kunreuther, 1999). The fundamental dilemma concerns insurers' ability to handle low-probability, high-consequence (LPHC) events, which generates a host of interrelated issues with respect to how the risk of such events are 1 These probable maximum loss (PML) estimates are based on a SOD-year "return" period.
