Series Statement: Contributions to nephrology Vol. 163
Content: The importance of peritoneal dialysis (PD) in the therapy of chronic kidney disease has been steadily increasing. The simultaneous advancement in clinical practice and basic research has increased overall knowledge and led to significant progress in the safe and adequate application of PD. Moreover, integration with other techniques in the therapy of uremia represents an important step in the optimization of the whole program of renal replacement therapy.Leading experts in the field have contributed to this volume, discussing topics such as the biology of the peritoneal membrane, dialysis solutions, inflammation and nutrition, PD adequacy, or complications and their management or PD in special settings. This compilation updates and expands the information on PD published in previous volumes of the series ‘Contributions to Nephrology’. It represents an important source of information for beginners and experts, basic scientists and clinical physicians, students and investigators who want to have a true update on current research and clinical practice in peritoneal dialysis

Series Statement: Contributions to nephrology Vol. 164
Content: Fluid overload is often observed in patients with heart failure and secondary oliguric states. A thorough assessment of the fluid status of the patient may help guide the therapy and prevent complications induced by inappropriate therapeutic strategies. The present publication is divided into four parts: Definition and Classification, Pathophysiology, Diagnosis and Therapy. In the first section, the authors present new definitions for heart failure, acute kidney injury and cardiorenal syndromes to facilitate the process of understanding the complex link between the heart and the kidney. Subsequently, different conditions leading to fluid overload are described, followed by an account of emerging diagnostic tools, therapies and technologies devoted to the treatment of patients with severe fluid-related disorders. Clearly structured and written, the present book is a practical tool for physicians and professionals involved in the management and care of patients with combined heart and kidney disorders. Moreover, it also serves as a reference textbook for medical students, residents and fellows dealing in everyday practice with fluid overloaded and oliguric patients
Note: A practical tool and reference work

Series Statement: Contributions to nephrology Vol. 149
Content: Hemodialysis therapy has become a well-established form of renal replacement, and due to continuous improvements in technology, a series of new biomaterials and techniques for the clinical routine have been developed. Nevertheless, cardiovascular disorders in hemodialysis and uremia represent one of the most important aspects of modern nephrological care. This publication is therefore dedicated to cardiovascular risk factors, the role of the endothelium, problems related to mineral disorders and finally to the possible impact of new technologies on the final outcome in hemodialysis. Being a state-of-the-art appraisal of today’s technology and current issues in hemodialysis with special regard to cardiovascular disorders and risk factors, this book is a synthesis between an educational effort aimed at the newer generations of physicians and nurses in the field of hemodialysis and a state-of-the-art description of the most advanced technologies in this field. At the same time, the lessons learned from large international trials, either already completed or to be completed in the years to come, are presented

Content: Since high-permeability membranes were first introduced, their performance has constantly improved. The publication at hand focuses on a new polymer, polyethersulfone, which was designed to provide better hydraulic permeability as well as high diffusive performance, thus allowing for fine tuning for different clinical applications. In the first part of the book, physico-chemical characteristics and ultrastructural features of the polyethersulfone membrane with regard to different clinical uses ranging from low to high permeability membranes are dealt with. The second part is devoted to clinical applications of the polyethersulfone membrane in ESRD. Its high biocompatibility, combined with the matching set up of the hemodialyzer, was associated with stable functional efficiency and permeability with regard to albumin, amino acids, beta-2-microglobulin and sepsis-associated cytokines in different hemodialytic modalities such as hemodiafiltration, high-flux hemodialysis, paired hemodiafiltration (PHF online), and low-flux hemodialysis. This publication is intended for students, clinicians and researchers alike. Descriptions of innovative technological and methodological approaches regarding the evaluation of membrane and dialyzer performances and biocompatibility make it a useful basis for those interested in future comparisons among different hemodialyzers

Content: Acute kidney injury is defined as an abrupt change in serum creatinine and/or urine output, and a majority of patients admitted to the ICU have some evidence of the disorder. Unfortunately, treatment for this complex syndrome is as yet lacking and understanding is limited. An interdisciplinary panel of experts has contributed to this volume, illuminating some of the fundamental and complex aspects of the disorder ranging from pathophysiology to treatment, from emerging biomarkers to genetic polymorphisms. Other contributions focus on immunological issues or the many complications of acute kidney injury and co-morbid conditions encountered, covering the fundamentals as well as the latest developments. Moreover, important technical aspects of extracorporeal therapies including vascular access, anticoagulation or fluid composition are introduced, and different approaches to renal support from intermittent dialysis to continuous therapies and hybrid techniques are discussed. A description of advanced extracorporeal techniques of organ support and their role in the management of sepsis and acute kidney injury in the context of an overall strategy of multi-organ failure management concludes the discussions. This volume not only provides a practical and up-to-date summary of current knowledge and technology, but also imparts a fundamental understanding of the pathogenesis and likely future developments in this field. It also serves to challenge and re-examine the fundamental underlying assumptions we hold regarding critical illness in general and acute kidney injury in particular
