Note: Im Jahre 1888 erschien im Verlag von Julius Springer, Berlin, als schmales Bändchen die erste Auflage von "W. HERZBERG: Papierprüfung - Ein Leitfaden bei der Untersuchung von Papier". Fußend auf den Entwicklungsarbeiten von E. HARTIG und E. HOYER und auf den in der Abteilung für Papierprüfung der Königlichen mechanisch-technischen Versuchsanstalt in Charlottenburg gewonnenen Erfahrungen wollte der Verfasser durch diese Zusammenstellung von Untersuchungsmethoden das Verständnis für die Notwendigkeit einer prüftechnischen Kontrolle des Papiers wecken und die bei der amtlichen Prüfung angewendeten Verfahren weiteren Kreisen zugänglich machen. Dies ist W. HERZBERG auch in vollem Umfang gelungen. Unter ständiger Berücksichtigung der fortschreitenden Entwicklung von Prüfmethoden, an der er als langjähriger Leiter der Papierabteilung des Staatlichen Materialprüfungsamtes Berlin­ Dahlem wesentlichen Anteil hatte, erschienen aus seiner Hand in den darauffolgenden Jahrzehnten weitere fünf Auflagen. Das Buch war in dieser Zeit zu einem verläßlichen Ratgeber für jeden geworden, der sich mit der Prüfung von Papier zu befassen hat. Nachdem Herr Geheimer Regierungsrat Prof. HERZBERG in den Ruhestand getreten war, wurde die letzte Auflage von R. KORN und B. SCHULZE bearbeitet. Sie erschien im Jahre 1932 und ist seit geraumer Zeit vergriffen. Auf Anregung von Herrn Prof. Dr. -Ing. E. SIEBEL, dem Herausgeber des "Handbuches der Werkstoffprüfung" sowie auf Wunsch des Verlags wurde das Buch nicht mehr neu aufgelegt, sondern als IV. Band in das genannte als Werk eingereiht, wobei sich allerdings eine fast vollständige Neubearbeitung erforderlich erwies

Band, in dem die chemisch-technischen Untersuchungsmethoden der Erzeugnisse der organisch-chemischen Großindustrie behandelt werden, liegt das Ergänzungswerk abgeschlossen vor. Der Inhalt hat gegenüber dem des Hauptwerkes zum Teil eine starke Wandlung erfahren, bedingt durch die gewaltige Umwälzung und die bewunderungswürdigen Erfolge in der Herstellung und Anwendung von organischen Stoffen als Werkstoffe und Faserstoffe. Bei diesen spielt für die Bewertung der Roh- und Fertigprodukte die Haltbarkeit und die mechanische Widerstandsfähigkeit eine ausschlaggebende Rolle, so daß deren Messung wertvollere und werkstoffgerechtere Ergebnisse liefert als die chemische Untersuchung allein. Aus diesem Grunde ist in den Abschnitten "Papier", "Gespinstfasern und Textilien", "Kunststoffe" und "Kautschuk und Gummiwaren" den physikalischen und mechanischen Untersuchungsmethoden ein viel breiterer Raum zugebilligt worden als bisher. Es ist so eine lehrreiche Übersicht über die auf verschiedenen Arbeitsgebieten gesondert entwickelten mechanisch-physikalischen Untersuchungsverfahren und Meßvorrichtungen zustande gekommen. Bei den Anstrichmitteln ist dieselbe Entwicklung nach der Seite der stärkeren Beachtung der Untersuchungen der Eigenschaften des fertigen Objektes zu verzeichnen, um aus ihnen die Eignung des Mittels selbst zu kennzeichnen
