Abstract: The article analyses the attitudes of British politicians, diplomats and journalists towards the reorientations of the Federal Republic′s policy regarding Eastern Europe and the German Question at the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s. Willy Brandt notes in his memoirs that misgivings against these policies which he initiated were much more limited in Whitehall compared to Washington or Paris. An analysis of British Government files however shows that things were somewhat more complicated in London. Especially during negotiations of the Treaty of Moscow, British points of view and interpretations emerged which point towards considerable reservations towards the Federal Republic′s New Eastern Policy. There were diverse reasons for the astonishingly positive rapport between the governments in Bonn and London: the embedding of German Eastern policy into the whole complex of East-West relations, the dialectic of German Eastern and British European policy, the (generational) changing of the guard among decision-makers and even economic considerations of the British government as well as peculiarities of the British party political landscape and media.
