Abstract:
João Paulo II via a missão evangelizadora da Igreja em perspectiva mundial. Na Exortação Ecclesia in América, de 1999, ele pensa numa Igreja atenta às culturas do continente, fator de efetiva solidariedade pan-americana e mundial através de uma abrangente geopolítica da evangelização. Em nosso mundo interconectado e globalizado, essa nova perspectiva mereceria tornar-se importante referencial para toda a ação pastoral da Igreja. Por outro lado, o documento mostra sérias deficiências; entre outras, indefinição e pouco aprofundamento de conceitos-chave; volta a modelos eclesiais pré-Vaticano II; silêncio sobre graves problemas da instituição eclesiástica. No presente artigo, em termos quantitativos, os limites apontados superam os elogios, que, porém, querem ser ponderados qualitativamente. Os próprios limites do documento favorecem aprofundamento, debate e criatividade. Desse modo, indiretamente, a Exortação acaba devolvendo às Conferências Episcopais e às Igrejas locais a tarefa de transformar os desejos do Papa em sólidos projetos – sem dúvida um excelente desfecho do Sínodo sobre a Igreja na América.Abstract: John Paul II saw the Church’s evangelizing mission in a world perspective. In the 1999 Exhortation Ecclesia in America he thinks of a Church oriented to the cultures of the American Continent, and as a factor of effective Pan-American and world solidarity through a comprehensive geopolitics of evangelization. In our interconnected and globalized world this new perspective deserves to become an important referential for the entire pastoral action of the Church. On the other hand, the document presents some serious deficiencies such as, among others, a certain indefinition and shallowness in the description of key concepts; it also returns to pre-Vatican II ecclesial models and says nothing about the serious problems of the ecclesiastic institution. In quantitative terms, the limitations pointed by the present article exceed the number of laudatory comments but the author is aware that qualitatively, credit must be given to the Ecclesia’s many positive points. The very shortages of the document encourage further studies, debates and creativity. Thus the Exhortation indirectly transfers to the local Bishops’Conferences and Churches the task of turning the Pope’s wishes into solid projects – no doubt an excellent outcome of the Synod about the Church in America.
