    Series Statement: Critical Powers
Content: In a world of deep political divisions and rising inequality, many of us feel the need for some form of collective resistance and transformative joint action. Calls for solidarity are heard everywhere. This book presents a critical proposal to guide our reflection on what solidarity is and why it matters. How is solidarity distinct from related ideas such as altruism, justice and fellow-feeling? What value does acting in solidarity with others have? In his lead essay, Andrea Sangiovanni offers compelling answers to these questions, arguing that solidarity is not just a fuzzy stand-in for feelings of togetherness but a distinctive social practice for an anxious age. His ideas are then put to the test in a series of responses from some of the world’s foremost philosophers and political theorists.

Content: In recent years, a growing body of research has been reassessing the role of higher music education institutions in light of the challenges posed by the dominant neoliberal economic system and the growing sensitivity to the reproduction of social inequalities in access to higher education and the labour market. This open access book offers international and interdisciplinary insights into these processes and practices and by examining the learning cultures, curricula designs and emancipatory initiatives within higher music education institutions. Drawing together empirical case studies from Austria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Switzerland, the UK and the USA, the authors explore the multifaceted ways to transition from study to work and the world of uncertainty and job insecurity currently experienced by a younger generation of musicians. Contributions shed light on the reactions of higher music education institutions to the neoliberal restructuring of the educational field and take a fresh look at the master-apprentice model of teaching and learning. They look at the discourses surrounding employability and artistic standards that form the traditional foundation of conservatoire education but also create the environment for unequal power relations and sexual misconduct. The authors also examine how gender, class and race/ethnicity pervade the creation and performance of music, and highlight alternative pedagogical strategies that fight discrimination and violence to bring about equity and empowerment. 〈i〉The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Series Statement: State of the apes 2017
Content: Infrastructure development in Africa and Asia is expanding at breakneck speed, largely in biodiversity-rich developing nations. The trend reflects governments’ efforts to promote economic growth in response to increasing populations, rising consumption rates and persistent inequalities. Large-scale infrastructure development is regularly touted as a way to meet the growing demand for energy, transport and food—and as a key to poverty alleviation. In practice, however, road networks, hydropower dams and “development corridors” tend to have adverse effects on local populations, natural habitats and biodiversity. Such projects typically weaken the capacity of ecosystems to maintain ecological functions on which wildlife and human communities depend, particularly in the face of climate change. This volume—State of the Apes: Infrastructure Development and Ape Conservation—presents original research and analysis, topical case studies and emerging tools and methods to inform debate, practice and policy with the aim of preventing and mitigating the harmful impacts of infrastructure projects on biodiversity. Using apes as a proxy for wildlife and cosystems themselves, it identifies opportunities for reconciling economic and social development with environmental stewardship.

Series Statement: State of the apes
Content: Social and economic systems worldwide are changing rapidly. These changes are accompanied by an increasing demand for natural resources, including land, water, minerals, energy sources, food and timber. Today's foremost challenge lies in finding the tools to address the complexity of these interrelated trends, and in implementing strategies to balance environmental and socioeconomic needs. This volume contributes to this search by presenting original research, topical case studies and emerging best practice from a range of key stakeholders to examine the interface between ape conservation and industrial agriculture. In assessing the drivers behind agricultural expansion and land investments, it sheds light on governance challenges and legal frameworks that shape land use. Intended for policy makers, industry experts, decision makers, academics, researchers and NGOs, it is designed to inform debate, practice and policy to help reconcile the goals of industrial agriculture with those of ape conservation and welfare, and social and economic development.
