N‐Oxides of Imidazolyls 2,4,5‐Trisubstituted imidazolyl 1‐oxides 2 and imidazolyl 1,3‐dioxides 7 could be synthesized by dehydrogenation of the corresponding 1‐hydroxyimidazoles and 1‐hydroxyimidazole 3‐oxides 1 and 8, respectively. The radicals 2 and 7 are unstable in solution in contrast to nitroxide radicals. The structure of the imidazolyl 1,3‐dioxides 7a, b was proved by their reaction with hydroquinone to yield the 1‐hydroxyimidazole 3‐oxides 8a, b. The most stable radical of the 7 ‐series is 2‐phenylphenanthro[9,10‐d]imidazolyl 1,3‐dioxide (7 b). The decay of 7 b in dimethylformamide was measured quantitatively by e.s.r. spectroscopy. The reaction‐order was 2.5 with respect to the concentration of the radical. This indicates a complicated mechanism of decay.
