Content: "The social practice of tact was an invention of the nineteenth century, a period when Britain was witnessing unprecedented urbanization, industrialization, and population growth. In an era when more and more people lived more closely than ever before with people they knew less and less about, tact was a new mode of feeling one's way with others in complex modern conditions. In this book, David Russell traces how the essay genre came to exemplify this sensuous new ethic and aesthetic. Russell argues that the essay form provided the resources for the performance of tact in this period and analyzes its techniques in the writings of Charles Lamb, John Stuart Mill, Matthew Arnold, George Eliot, and Walter Pater. He shows how their essays offer grounds for a claim about the relationship among art, education, and human freedom -- an "aesthetic liberalism" -- not encompassed by traditional political philosophy or in literary criticism. For these writers, tact is not about codes of politeness but about making an art of ordinary encounters with people and objects and evoking the fullest potential in each new encounter. Russell demonstrates how their essays serve as a model for a critical handling of the world that is open to surprises, and from which egalitarian demands for new relationships are made. Offering fresh approaches to thinking about criticism, sociability, politics, and art, Tact concludes by following a legacy of essayistic tact to the practice of British psychoanalysts like D. W. Winnicott and Marion Milner. "--

Content: The aim of this paper is to show how the incorporation of metaphoric and poetic ways of thinking into the evaluation of a leadership development programme both captured the imagination of the employees and benefited the core business of a manufacturing production plant. Qualitative data evaluating the effectiveness of a substantial leadership programme were presented back to all members of a manufacturing plant (executive and non-executive) in the form of composite narratives over an eighteen-month period. Recommendations were derived from the text of the narrative and were progressively implemented. Such was the positive response to the written narratives that senior management asked the researchers to present the narratives in the form of a ‘live’ performance. Evaluation through qualitative methodology lends itself to an imaginative interpretation and presentation. Although qualitative and quantitative data tend to be regarded as complementary in applied research, it was management’s decision to employ only a qualitative process in this instance. The decision was fortuitous, given that the leadership development programme was initially judged to be a failure, as it triggered a subsequent imaginative engagement that turned a failure into a success.

Content: Litigation financing is the practice whereby a noninterested third-party investor offers capital to a plaintiff in return for a share of a settlement, judgment, or verdict down the road. Fifteen years ago, litigation financing was nonexistent in the American legal system. Today, it is a multi-billion dollar industry. Simply put, litigation financing has converted the American legal system into a "legal market." Unfortunately, outside of those directly participating in the market, this market is a black box.Currently, existing scholarship on litigation financing fails to define key aspects of the legal market. It cannot define how large or sophisticated the market is, how litigation financing firms make money, or where the market is likely to go. This paper attempts to close this aforementioned hole in existing scholarship by focusing solely on litigation financing's market aspect. This paper analyzes how litigation financing firms make money, forecasts the future of the market, and predicts what distortive effects a future market could have on our legal system. In doing so, this paper provides a foundational understanding of the current state of litigation financing, and forecasts its future as it grows more sophisticated by the day

Content: Over the course of the Twentieth Century the “lender-of-last-resort” theory has become one of the main weapons for central banks to deploy to stave off credit crunches. However, lender-of-last-resort is not the only theoretically available tool for central banks to address credit crunches resulting from financial crashes. One of the more interesting, and increasingly discussed models is the “buyer-of-last-resort” theory. In some ways the opposite of lender-of-last-resort, buyer-of-last-resort cures credit crunches not by lending on assets but by buying the assets themselves. In doing so, it produces the same result as lender-of-last-resort, namely it disincentivizes market participants from driving an asset's price down in order to generate liquidity. Both lender-of-last-resort and buyer-of-last-resort assume a certain set of economic principals in order to address credit crunches. Specifically at issue in this paper is buyer-of-last-resort's assumption that its proper execution will stave of a credit crunch in any type of financial crash. This assumption, unfortunately, is false. buyer-of-last-resort is incontrovertibly limited in scope in situations where a crashing asset is opaque. Hence, it can never operate as a first strategy in opaque asset crashes and the financial crises they may cause. In so disproving, this paper thus disproves the theoretical scope of buyer-of-last-resort
