Der Beitrag entfaltet anhand des näheren und weiteren Kontextes von 1Sam 24,18 das den Samuelbüchern inhärente Konzept von Gerechtigkeit, das sich in dem Vergleich der beiden Charaktere Saul und David widerspiegelt. David tut, nach Sauls Aussage, das Gute. Er lässt sich von seinen Gewissensbissen leiten und tastet das Leben des Königs nicht an. Er lässt Gott richten und richtet selbst Recht und Gerechtigkeit im Volk auf. Saul hingegen behauptet selbst, dass er David Böses angetan hat. Für ihn gibt es kein inneres Korrekturmittel wie das Gewissen (wörtlich: "Herz") Davids. Über Saul wird gesagt, dass er überall, wohin er sich wandte, verurteilte (1Sam 14,48). Die Erzählungen der Samuelbücher widerspiegeln keine absolute Definition von Gerechtigkeit, sondern ein relatives Verständnis, nach dem David gerechter ist als Saul. Das liegt allerdings in dem von Gott vorgegebenen Schicksal der beiden Gestalten begründet.
