The objective of the present study was to compare the effect of ammonium (NH4+)- and nitrate (NO3-)-based nitrogen (N)-nutrition on root growth of winter wheat in three one-year field trials. Both N-fertilizers, a granular calcium chloride nitrate (NO3--based) and a granular urea amended with urease and nitrification inhibitor, were applied at total rate of 180 kg N ha-1, but differed in temporal application strategy. To determine root development, soil monoliths were taken at BBCH stage 32, 37, and 65 up to a depth of 80 cm. The roots were separated and analyzed with the software WinRHIZO®. In total, no significant effect on root growth of wheat plants was observed concerning different N-supply. Only at selected BBCH stages, differences between root length density of both N-fertilizer variants could be revealed.
