Abstract: Novel technology that enables mobile and potentially uninterrupted media use is driving changes in leisure behaviours including, amongst other things, non-linear television consumption. The question examined in the article is under which conditions, if any, well-known fictional serial formats described as "quality" or "transgressive" tv have the capacity to initiate educational processes aside from the transformations brought on by digitalisation to the worlds of work and education, and therefore primarily self-directed. Using the widely-distributed HBO series, "Game of Thrones" (2011–2019 ) as an example, those aspects relevant for educational theory that are conducive of the individual's educational work on themselves are presented. The presentation’s main focus lies on points of reference which allow viewers to develop a critical awareness of real-world social circumstances through engaging with the fictional. (DIPF/Orig.)
