Die Studie leistet einen Beitrag zur Geschichte der Grammatikschreibung des Französischen und Italienischen und legt ihren Schwerpunkt auf Frankreich und die deutschsprachigen Länder im 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhundert. Da bereits in den Titeln Grammaire des Dames und Grammatica per le Dame ein explizit formulierter Adressatenbezug erscheint, konzentrieren sich die Fragen, die dieser seriellen Untersuchung zugrunde liegen, weniger auf die Grammatiktheorie als vielmehr auf den aus der Zeit heraus zu entwickelnden Bezug zu den Damen. Damit gewinnen andere Aspekte an Bedeutung, die mit Bezug auf das Konstrukt «Damen» zu interpretieren sind: Widmungen und deren Adressaten, Ex Libris, Format, Umfang und inhaltliche Schwerpunktbildung der Werke, die Verwendung der Fachbegriffe, die Präsentation der Inhalte bzw. der Kommunikationsmodus, der Zusammenhang Sprachbewertung – Genderkonstrukt sowie die Zeiträume der editorischen Verdichtung vor dem Hintergrund historischer Ereignisse. Der Band enthält eine umfangreiche kommentierte Bibliographie und anschauliches Bildmaterial
