Inhalt: The Libyan Bedouin are Arab people of tribal and nomadic pastoralist backgrounds who have ties to the Libyan Desert. This desert comprises the western part of the Egypt, where it is known as the Western Desert, and the eastern part of Libya. This file on the Libyan Bedouin consists of 14 documents and includes ethnographies which provide rich accounts and varying perspectives of Libyan-Bedouin culture and society. These works include Evans-Pritchard's historical and sociological analysis of the Sansusi Order, Emry's study of power in Bedouin society, Behnke's study of Bedouin political ecology, and Abu-Lughod's studies of gender and poetry. Other studies discuss sociopolitical organization and customary law. Three studies examine more recent changes in Bedouin society as a result of sedentization, intrusion of the state, and economic development

Inhalt: The Lozi consist of a number of interrelated ethnic groups located along the Zambezi River in Barotse Province of western Zambia. This file consists of 11 documents, including one translation from the German, and covers the period from 1920-1960. Turner's work provides an overall view of Lozi culture and society touchs on the major areas of Lozi ethnography as reflected in the cultural patterns of the affiliated tribes of the Central Barotse Plains. Lozi political structure is discussed in some detail in Gluckman and further supplemented by Jensen. Peters discusses native agricultural techniques, soils and general land use. Gluckman's writings deal with the pattern of land distribution of Barotse property to all homesteads, the king's protection of subjects' rights to a piece of land and the forms of tribute and gifts from commoners to royalty, the relation of bride-price, presence or lack of agnatic lineage groups, inheritance rules and general stability of marriage and the nuclear household, aspects of Barotse jurisprudence, and economic behavior. Reynolds presents a compilation of data relevant to Barotse sorcery based on records of investigations and judicial proceedings conducted by British officials in 1956 during a wave of sorcery and witchcraft incidents. Prins is a comprehensive and reliable account of Lozi society as it existed between the years 1876-1896

Inhalt: One of the main goals of optimal control theory is to provide a theoretical basis for choosing an appropriate controller for whatever system is under consideration by the researcher or engineer. Two popular norms that have proved useful are known as H-2 and H - infinity control. The first has been particularly applicable to problems arising in the aerospace industry. However, most industrial problems are badly modeled and the second norm proved to be more appropriate when the actual conditions of the problem did not conform to the stipulated conditions of the theory. This book takes the topic of H-infinity control as a point of departure and pursues an improved controller design which has been suggested in the mainstream of robust control. Its main theme, minimum entropy control, provides a means of trading off some of the features of other control problems. The book is aimed at research workers in networking systems as well as those in operator theory and linear multivariable control. The use of stochastic methods makes the book also of importance to the circuits and systems community. CONTENTS: Preface • Introduction • Preliminaries • Induced Operator Norms • Discrete-Time Entropy • Connections With Related Optimal Control Problems • Minimum Entropy Control • Continuous-Time Entropy • A. Proof of Theorem • B. Proof of Theorem • Bibliography • Notation • Index.

Inhalt: In 1994, in my role as Technical Program Chair for the 17th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, I solicited proposals for mini-symposia to provide delegates with accessible summaries of important issues in research areas outside their particular specializations. Terry Peters and his colleagues submitted a proposal for a symposium on Fourier Trans forms and Biomedical Engineering whose goal was "to demystify the Fourier transform and describe its practical application in biomedi cal situations". This was to be achieved by presenting the concepts in straightforward, physical terms with examples drawn for the parti cipants work in physiological signal analysis and medical imaging. The mini-symposia proved to be a great success and drew a large and appreciative audience. The only complaint being that the time allocated, 90 minutes, was not adequate to allow the participants to elaborate their ideas adequately. I understand that this feedback helped the authors to develop this book.
