Analyse der konkurrierenden Positionen von Abdulfaz Elchibey (Präsident 1992/93 und bis zu seinem Tod 2000 Repräsentant der nationalistischen Opposition) und von seinem Nachfolger im Präsidentenamt, Heydar Aliyev, bzw. dessen Sohnes und Nachfolgers, Ilham Aliyev, zu den beiden Themen, die die außenpolitische Agenda Aserbaidschans beherrschen: wie kann die armenisch besetzte Region Berg-Karabach wieder gewonnen werden und in welchem Verhältnis soll der Staat zu den ethnischen Azerbaidschanern in den angrenzenden iranischen Provinzen stehen? Die beiden unterschiedlichen Ansätze stehen für die beiden Hauptrichtungen, die sich im nationalen Diskurs sowohl zu den beiden außenpolitischen Fragen wie auch zu den Vorstellungen von der aserbaidschanischen Nation herausgebildet haben.
