Michael Ende (1929–1995) wird fälschlicherweise oft als „Kinderbuchautor“ abgestempelt, dabei richten sich seine Werke nicht (allein) an Kinder und Jugendliche, sondern sind durchdrungen von einer Vielzahl philosophischer Fragestellungen und Reflexionen. Anhand seiner beiden bekanntesten Romane „Momo“ (1973) und „Die unendliche Geschichte“ (1979) arbeitet der Autor kritisch und methodisch höchst reflektiert das bisher kaum gewürdigte philosophische Denken Endes heraus und ordnet es in einen größeren philosophiegeschichtlichen Kontext ein. Endes Werke grenzen sich auf Grund ihres ausgeprägt reflexiven Charakters nicht nur vom Genre „Fantasy“ ab, er vertritt auch eine eigene, vom Schöpferischen ausgehende Kunsttheorie und Anthropologie. Damit einher geht – vor allem in „Momo“ – eine klare Kapitalismuskritik sowie Reflexionen über die Bedingungen der (Un-)Möglichkeit einer ursprünglich-schöpferischen Existenz des Menschen unter den gegenwärtigen gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen.
