Content: D. Shambangh introduces seven articles (published in this issue of the journal) on Deng Xiaoping. He points out that Deng pursued many goals during his lifetime, but none more central nor persistently than strengthening the Chinese nation-state. Deng inherited from Mao Zedong a stagnant economy, alienated society and paralysed polity. He will bequeth to his successors a robust economy and rejuvenated society, but antiquated political system. Content: This introductory overview to 13 other articles published in this issue of this journal is intended to identify some principal trends of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) as D. Shambaugh sees them, but at the same time to emphasize some of the important information, conclusions and insights contained in these articles. He takes stock of the transitional Chinese military in three general categories: politics, professionalism, and procurement and power projection. (DÜI-Sen)
