Content: In 1643/4 the once-famous Francis Cleyn painted the unhappy young heir of Corfe Castle, John Bankes, and his tutor, Dr Maurice Williams. The painter is now almost forgotten, the painting much neglected, and the sitters themselves have left little to mark their lives, but on the table of the painting lies a book, open to an immediately identifiable and very significant page. The representation omits the author's name and the book's title; it sits there as a code, as only viewers who had encountered the original and the characteristic figures on its frontispiece would have known its significance. The book is Galileo's Dialogue on the two chief world systems (1632), the defence of Copernican cosmology that incited the infamous clash between its author and the Church, and its presence in this painting is no accident, but instead a statement of learning, attitudes, and cosmopolitan engagement in European discourse by the painting's English subjects. Grasping hold of the clue, John Helibron deciphers the significance of this contentious book's appearance in a painting from Stuart England to unravel the interlocking threads of art history, political and religious history, and the history of science. Drawing on unexploited archival material and a wide range of printed works, he weaves together English court culture and Italian connections, as well as the astronomical and astrological knowledge propagated in contemporary almanacs and deployed in art, architecture, plays, masques, and political discourse. Heilbron also explores the biographies of Sir John, Sir Maurice, and the painter, Francis Clyne, setting them into the narrative of their rich and cultured history

Content: A revisionist reading of modern art that examines how artworks are captured as property to legitimize powerIn this provocative new account, David Joselit shows how art from the nineteenth to the twenty-first centuries began to function as a commodity, while the qualities of the artist, nation, or period themselves became valuable properties. Joselit explores repatriation, explaining that this is not just a contemporary conflict between the Global South and Euro-American museums, noting that the Louvre, the first modern museum, was built on looted works and faced demands for restitution and repatriation early in its history. Joselit argues that the property values of white supremacy underlie the ideology of possessive individualism animating modern art, and he considers issues of identity and proprietary authorship.Joselit redefines art’s politics, arguing that these pertain not to an artwork’s content or form but to the way it is “captured,” made to represent powerful interests—whether a nation, a government, or a celebrity artist collected by oligarchs. Artworks themselves are not political, but occupy at once the here and now and an “elsewhere”—an alterity—that can’t ever be fully appropriated. The history of modern art, Joselit asserts, is the history of transforming this alterity into private property.Narrating scenes from the emergence and capture of modern art—touching on a range of topics that include the Byzantine church, French copyright law, the 1900 Paris Exposition, W.E.B. Dubois, the conceptual artist Adrian Piper, and the controversy over Dana Schutz’s painting Open Casket—Joselit argues that the meaning of art is its infinite capacity to generate experience over time

Content: "Richly illustrated and thoroughly researched, A Shared Vision showcases one of the most significant collections of American art assembled in the twenty-first century. At the same time, it celebrates the generosity and vision of collectors Macon and Joan Brock, whose promised gift of the Macon and Joan Brock Collection of American Art to the Chrysler Museum of Art represents the most transformative addition to the institution's collection since Walter P. Chrysler Jr.'s foundational gift more than 50 years ago. The Brocks exercised great foresight in the construction of a collection for the public's benefit and the gift of the collection elevates the stature of the Chrysler's American art holdings and programs, transforming it into a national leader in the exhibition, study, and appreciation of American art. In addition to an introductory essay and interview with collector Joan Brock, catalogue entries by a distinguished group of scholars and curators offer new insights into more than 70 works of art by 54 different artists. The Brock Collection spans nearly one hundred years of American art, from just after the Civil War to the mid-twentieth century. Works by a wide range of artists from Winslow Homer, Childe Hassam, and John Singer Sargent to Marsden Hartley, Max Weber, and George Bellows chart a broad history of American art. Less well-known figures like Mary Fairchild MacMonnies, Helen Corson Hovenden, and Sally Michel bolster the rich depth of the collection and propose new contours to the shape of American art history. Together the works included in the volume and their scholarly commentaries contribute a fresh look at one of the most vital and dynamic periods of American art"--

Content: Beginning with Paul Strand's landmark From the Viaduct in 1916 and continuing through the present day, Photography's Last Century examines defining moments in the history of the medium. Featuring nearly 100 masterworks, it includes both rare and iconic examples of works by photography's most renowned and influential artists, including Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Walker Evans, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Man Ray, and Cindy Sherman, as well as a diverse group of lesser-known practitioners who helped define photography in the 20th and early 21st centuries. Jeff Rosenheim's detailed and perceptive text addresses the avant-garde artists of the early decades of the 20th century, the changing role of the camera after the Second World War, the rise of the international market for fine photographic prints in the 1960s, the photography boom in the late 1970s, and the implications of calling this period the "last" century of photography. Exquisitely designed and produced, this book offers new insight on the development and significance of photography as an art form over the course of the past 100 years. Content: The outstanding Burke Collection of Italian miniatures, which is housed in Special Collections in the Stanford University Libraries, has been built over more than twenty years and includes manuscript leaves, cuttings, and codices by many of the greatest Italian artists of the medieval and Renaissance periods. Works in the collection range in date from the 12th through the 16th centuries, and in them we see masterfully painted initials, borders, and miniatures that enhance our appreciation of the great skill that John Ruskin called ?writing made beautiful.?00Comprised of over 40 miniatures from 35 different artists representing 13 different regions of Italy, the collection is characterized by its astonishingly high quality. It includes works produced by the most renowned Italian illuminators, who are often also documented as painters. Artists from Florence and Siena are certainly the best represented in the Burke collection. These include masterpieces by Don Simone Camaldolese and Lorenzo Monaco of Florence, and Giovanni di Paolo and Pellegrino di Mariano of Siena. The collection equally underlines the range of styles achieved by Italian illuminators active in Emilia-Romana, where great interpreters of Giotto were active, such as Neri da Rimini, Tommaso da Modena, and Nicolò di Giacomo, as well as masterpieces of the Venetian school, such as works by Cristoforo Cortese and the Master of the Murano Gradual. Lombardy is represented by one of the notable specialists of late Gothic painting, the Olivetan Master. Among the many highlights, there is the incomparable and world-class Crucifixion of the Master of Saint Francis of Assisi.
