Inszeniert wurde der Film von Manfred Noa, einem der talentiertesten jungen Regisseure der Weimarer Republik. Er schuf einen Film von ungebrochener Aktualität, der - die Inszenierung als Historienfilm mag das zunächst nicht vermuten lassen - einen durchaus modernen Blick auf Lessings "Dramatisches Gedicht" aus dem Jahre 1779 wirft. Die Eckpunkte der Handlung bleiben dieselben, die Ringparabel steht im Mittelpunkt, der Appell am Schluss zur Toleranz ist da - und doch spricht aus dem Film eher Skepsis gegenüber der ordnenden Kraft menschlicher Vernunft und aufklärerischer Ideale. Noas Verfilmung lenkt den Blick auf die Gefährdungen von Lessings Toleranzutopie und thematisiert den Irrsinn der Glaubenskriege, in denen sich der Appell für Glaubensfreiheit fast als Wahnwitz ausnimmt. Für dieses Werk entstand im Auftrag von ZDF/ARTE eine symphonische Filmmusik, die den historischen Brückenschlag, den Noa mit seiner Adaption von Lessings Nathan vollzogen hat, in die heutige Zeit fortführt und die dem Film und seiner Problematisierung kultureller Identitäten einen zeitgenössischen Ausdruck gibt. Kaum ein anderer Musiker empfiehlt sich für diese Aufgabe so sehr wie der deutsch-libanesische Komponist Rabih Abou-Khalil, der auch bei diesem Projekt verschiedene Stilistiken und Spielweisen der klassischen arabischen und europäischen Musik miteinander verwebt und in einen hochkomplexen Dialog bringt: ein großes Symphonieorchester , ein Streichtrio und eine international besetzte Solistengruppe, bestehend aus Michel Godard , Jarrod Cagwin und dem Komponisten selbst . Rabih Abou-Khalil wurde im Lauf seiner Karriere immer wieder als idealtypischer Vermittler der westlich-europäischen und orientalischen Musikwelt bezeichnet. Er verbindet Rock, Jazz und Klassik mit dem mittelöstlichen Tonsystem. Die neue Musik zum Film wurde am 24. Oktober 2009 in der Philharmonie München uraufgeführt.
