„Walter Heynowski, geboren 1927, und Gerhard Scheumann, geboren 1930, zählen zu den wichtigsten Dokumentarfilmern der DDR. Ursprünglich vom Journalismus kommend, machten sie seit Mitte der 1960er-Jahre gemeinsam Filme in der DDR. Die kreative Zusammenarbeit zwischen den zwei Publizisten gipfelte am 01. Mai 1969 in der Gründung des Heynowski & Scheumann-Studios, kurz »H&S«, das von der DEFA unabhängig war und Privilegien besaß, von denen andere DDR-Filmemacher nur träumen konnten. In 25 Jahren entstanden mehr als 70 Dokumentarfilme, die vielfach ausgezeichnet worden sind. »H&S« wurde – nicht gerade üblich in der zentralorganisierten Filmlandschaft der DDR – zur eigenständigen Marke, die den DDR-Dokumentarfilm im Ausland bekannt machte. Leitgedanke fast aller Filme von Heynowski und Scheumann ist die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Imperialismus auf der Welt. Viele der Werke sind und waren ästhetisch-moralisch umstritten; Kritiker werfen den Filmemachern grobe Polemik und ideologische Propaganda vor. Andererseits zeichnet die Filme ein »hoher Standard an Argumentation, Rhetorik und Inanspruchnahme künstlerischer Mittel« (Günter Jordan) aus, vielleicht sogar eine »formale Virtuosität« (Wilhelm Roth). Dass H&S einst weltberühmt waren, zwischen 1974 und 1989 mehr als vierzig Retrospektiven auf allen Kontinenten bestritten, über Jahrzehnte zu Festivals eingeladen wurden und zahllose Preise in Ost wie West erhielten, ist in der deutschen Öffentlichkeit, selbst unter Filmfachleuten, inzwischen fast unbekannt. Es ist umso mehr an der Zeit, die Filme von H&S neu zu entdecken. Vor dem zeitgeschichtlichen und biografischen Hintergrund, als politische Zeichen ihrer Ära – und als spannende ästhetische Versuchsanordnungen.“ (Absolut Medien)
