1924 gründete E. E. (Galka) Scheyer (1889-1945) in Weimar mit den 4 wichtigen Vertretern der klassischen Moderne eine Künstlergruppe und emigrierte noch im gleichen Jahr in die Vereinigten Staaten, um dort Vorträge zu halten, Ausstellungen für die "Blue Four" zu organisieren und das Werk in der Neuen Welt vorzustellen, zu verbreiten und Sammler zu finden. Ihre lebenslange Freundschaft mit A. v. Jawlensky und ihr Wirken über 20 Jahre hinweg werden hier dokumentiert, und es wird aufgezeigt, mit welchen Schwierigkeiten sie auch zu kämpfen hatte. Daneben wird die Emigrantenszene während des Dritten Reiches in Kalifornien beleuchtet. 40 Friefe aus amerikanischen Archiven und Bibliotheken sind abgedruckt, zum Teil faksimiliert; dazu eine Chronologie der Ereignisse, Ausstellungsverzeichnis, Literatur und Katalog der 162 ausgestellten Werke, die nahezu alle abgebildet sind.
