Umfang: XVIII, 442 Seiten : , Illustrationen, Karten.
    ISBN: 978-0-300-15228-9
    Serie: Yale agrarian studies series
Inhalt: For two thousand years the disparate groups that now reside in Zomia (a mountainous region the size of Europe that consists of portions of seven Asian countries) have fled the projects of the organized state societies that surround them - slavery, conscription, taxes, corvée labor, epidemics, and warfare. This book, essentially an 'anarchist history', is the first-ever examination of the huge literature on state-making whose author evaluates why people would deliberately and reactively remain stateless. Among the strategies employed by the people of Zomia to remain stateless are physical dispersion in rugged terrain; agricultural practices that enhance mobility; pliable ethnic identities; devotion to prophetic, millenarian leaders; and maintenance of a largely oral culture that allows them to reinvent their histories and genealogies as they move between and around states.
Anmerkung: Includes bibliographical references and index. - Contents: Hills, valleys, and states: an introduction to Zomia -- State space: zones of governance and appropriation -- Concentrating manpower and grain: slavery and irrigated rice -- Civilization and the unruly -- Keeping the state at a distance: the peopling of the hills -- State evasion, state prevention: the culture and agriculture of escape -- Orality, writing, and texts -- Ethnogenesis: a radical constructionist case -- Prophets of renewal -- Conclusion

Inhalt: The indigenous populations of North America created impressive societies, engaged in trade, and had varied economic, social, and religious cultures. Over the past century, archaeological and ethnological research throughout all regions of North America has revealed much about the indigenous peoples of the continent. This book examines the long and complex history of human occupation in North America, covering its distinct culture as well as areas of the Arctic, California, Eastern Woodlands, Great Basin, Great Plains, Northwest Coast, Plateau, Southwest, and Subarctic. Complete with maps, a chronology that spans the history from 11,000 B.C. to A.D. 1850, an introductory essay, more than 700 dictionary entries, and a comprehensive bibliography, this reference is a valuable tool for scholars and students. An appendix of museums that have North American collections and a listing of archaeological sites that allow tours by the public also make this an accessible guide to the interested lay reader and high school student.
Inhalt: Intro -- Contents -- Editor's Foreword -- Acknowledgments -- Reader's Note -- Acronyms and Abbreviations -- Maps -- Chronology -- Introduction -- The Dictionary -- Appendix A: Museums with North American Collections -- Appendix B: Major North American Archaeological Sites Available for Public Tours -- Bibliography -- About the Author.

Inhalt: Some of the most visible expressions of human culture are illustrated architecturally. Unfortunately for archaeologists, the architecture being studied is not always visible and must be inferred from soil inconsistencies or charred remains. This study deals with research into roughly a millennium of Native American architecture in the Southeast and includes research on the variation of construction techniques employed both above and below ground. Most of the architecture discussed is that of domestic houses with some emphasis on large public buildings and sweat lodges. The authors use an array
