Seit ihrer Gründung steht die Türkei politisch, ökonomisch und sozial zwischen Europa und dem Mittleren Osten, versteht sich daher auch als Brücke zwischen den Kulturen. Der Beitrag untersucht die innen- und außenpolitische Entwicklung der Türkei nach der Iran-Contra-Affäre bis zumBeginn der Intifada. In der Innenpolitik werden die Rolle des Militärs, die Bedeutung extremistischer politischer Parteien und die Menschenrechtssituation analysiert. Angesichts der schlechten wirtschaftlichen Situation sucht die Türkei in den 80er Jahren die Einbindung in den internationalen Markt, zwischen IWF-Auflagen und angestrebter EG-Mitgliedschaft. Die außenpolitischen Beziehungen zur NATO und den Supermächten gestalten sich als Balanceakt. Die enge militärische Verbindung zu den USA soll nicht als Provokation gegen die UdSSR aufgefaßt werden. Im Hinblick auf den Iran-Irak-Krieg bewahrt die Türkei Neutralität. Weitere Themen: die syrisch-türkischen und die bulgarisch-türkischen Beziehungen; die Türkei und der Nahostkonflikt. (DÜI-Gbh)
