Content: The music of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven forms a cornerstone of the modern repertoire, but very little is known about the context in which these composers worked. This volume of twelve essays by leading international scholars covers some of the musical traditions and practices of this little-understood period of music history. Beginning with the early decades of the eighteenth century, the volume documents selected aspects of musical life and style from the late Baroque period to the early years of the nineteenth century. The four main areas covered in this exploration of new territories in music history are orchestral music, sacred music, opera and keyboard music. Georg Reutter (Haydn's teacher), Antonio Salieri (Mozart's colleague) and Joseph Wolfl (a rival of Beethoven) are only three of the prominent musicians of the period who are discussed at length.

Content: Examining the evidence from Belgium – one of only five countries where euthanasia is practised legally – an international panel of experts considers the implications of legalised euthanasia and assisted suicide. Looking at the issue from an international perspective, the authors have written an invaluable in-depth analysis of the ethical aspects of this complex area. The discussion forms a solid foundation for informed debate about assisted dying. With contributors from a broad range of disciplines, this book is ideal for students, academics, legislators and anyone interested in legal, medical, social and philosophical ethics. A vital and timely examination of a growing phenomenon and one of the most challenging ethical questions of our time.

Content: "What is solitude, why do we crave and fear it, and how do we distinguish it properly from loneliness? It lies at the core of the lives of philosophers and their self-reflective contemplations, and it is the enabling (and disabling) condition that allows us to seriously question how to live creatively and meaningfully. David Farrell Krell is one of the decisive philosophical voices on how philosophers can creatively engage their solitudes. The scale and range of his understanding of solitudes are taken up in this book by some of the most distinguished Continental philosophers. Authors address the problem of solitude from different angles, and imagine how to face and respond creatively to it. Blending philosophical narrative and straightforward philosophical treatises, this book provides inspiration for contemplation of our own versions of solitude and their creative potentials. Some authors focus on the work of historical figures in philosophy or poetry, such as Heidegger and Hölderlin, while others deal more directly with Krell's work as exemplary of their own imaginings of creative solitudes. Other authors respond more personally and creatively in their demonstrations of how we can, and must, seek our solitudes. Including an original chapter by David Farrell Krell, this book is an invigorating meditation on the possibility of being philosophical about a life through solitude, and the meaning of this powerfully resonant and universal human experience."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

Content: Lifeworlds, originally discussed by Husserl and developed by Schütz, are the whole grounds of our ways of sustaining life in communities. Intensified loss of Lifeworlds has lead to Deathworlds researchers from around the world engaging in phenomenological writing to expand their awareness of experiences of significance in their lives. They connected via face-to-face communication and computer platforms. Recognizing and sharing emotional challenges, participants revealed Deathworlds within their Lifeworlds (traumatic echoes of war, genocide, oppression), and practices that contribute to illness, community decline, and climate change. Participants and researchers collaborated on chapters including: grief, death, addiction, environmental devastations, suicidal veterans, impacts of disasters, homelessness and Deathworld politics. The participants developed reflective qualities of being such as open-mindedness, sense of "wonder" and embodied awareness.
Content: These are among the Ten Qualities of Phenomenologists discovered from prior research. Deathworlds to Lifeworlds will appeal to those looking for practical ways to expand consciousness, and promote collaboration for social and environmental justice. "Deathworlds to Lifeworlds wakes people up to how current economic and social forces are destroying life and communities on our planet, as I have mapped in my work. The chapters by scholars around the world in this powerful book testify to the pervasive consequences of the proliferation of Deathworld-making and ways that collaboration across cultures can help move us forward." -Saskia Sassen, Robert S. Lynd Professor of Sociology at Columbia University and member of its Committee on Global Thought. She is the author of Expulsions, Brutality and Complexity in the Global Economy, was elected to the Royal Academy of the Sciences of the Netherlands, and has been made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres by the French government.
Content: "Recognizing the inseparability of experience, consciousness, environment, and problematics in rebalancing life systems, this book offers solutions from around the world." -Four Arrows, aka Don Trent Jacobs, author of Sitting Bull's Words For A World in Crises, et al. "Deathworlds is a love letter for the planet-our home. By documenting places that no longer sustain life, the authors collectively pull back the curtain on these places, rendering them meaningful by connecting what ails us with what ails the world. They offer powerful stories and ways to take action to re-create life affirming societies and practices." -Katrina S.
