Der Autor erzählt die Geschichte der rechtsradikalen Freikorps zu Beginn der Weimarer Republik, deren terroristische Aktivitäten in der Ermordung des Aussenministers Walther Rathenaus 1922 kulminierten. Rezension: Der mit seinen letzten Büchern (2015; 2017) zum Bestsellerautor gewordene Historiker und Filmemacher nimmt sich hier den Rechtsterror zu Beginn der Weimarer Republik vor, den er im Vorwort und in einer Bildfolge zum Schluss etwas vordergründig mit dem Terror der letzten Jahre (Lübke etc.) kurzschliesst. Die bekannte Geschichte der Freikorps, insbesondere der "Organisation Consul" (M. Sabrow: 1999) erschliesst Huber mit sozialpsychologischem Fokus als Geschichte von Menschen, die als Verlierer historischer Entwicklungen zu Attentätern werden. Gestützt auf Selbstzeugnisse, macht er das an Leitfiguren wie dem Freikorps-Führer Hermann Ehrhardt fest. Seine blendend geschriebene Erzählung verdichtet er dramaturgisch, indem er die Geschichte der Freikorps nach dem 1. Weltkrieg parallel setzt zur politischen Entwicklung des Aussenministers Walther Rathenau, bis beide Erzählstränge in der Ermordung Rathenaus 1922 zusammenfallen und kulminieren.
