"What happens when your best friend - someone with whom you've been learning to do cool things like climbing tree, flying kites and riding bicycles - starts to develop romantic notions about you?" In the words of director Yasmin Ahmad (1958 - 2009) this is the central theme of her film, for which she drew from her own childhood memories. Ten year old tomboy Orked becomes the best of friends with twelve year old Mukhsin during one school holiday. Their friendship comes under strain when Mukhsin realizes his feelings for Orked go deeper than just friendship. She on the other hand is just too young to cope with these kind of feelings. Ahmad portrays her characters with warmth and humour, without ever becoming sentimental. Mukhsin is a personal and truthful exploration of an experience that is just as universal as it is uncomfortable: your very first love. The film won several film prizes, among which two during the Berlin Film Festival 2007. (Moskwood)
