Im Jahr 1940 erschienen die "Graphischen Tafeln zur Beurteilung statistischer Zahlen" mit dem Ziel, statistische Tests und Abschätzungen von Zufallsbereichen den statistisch arbeitenden Wissenschaftlern und Praktikern der verschiedenen Fachgebiete ohne komplizierte Formelrechnungen praxisgerecht nahezubringen. Die Tafeln wurden ausgiebig benutzt; die dritte Auflage erschien 1953. Die statistischen Zahlenprüfungen sind inzwischen ein selbstverständlicher Bestandteil wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens in den empirischen Wissenschaften und ihren Anwendungsgebieten geworden. Die Zahl der Routinemethoden hat sich vermehrt. Auch der Benutzer, der nur für einen bestimmten Zweck eine Methode sucht und sich nicht für die weiteren Zusammenhänge interessiert, muß sich heute in einem reichhaltigen Methodenangebot zurechtfinden und benötigt einfache und knappe Anleitungen. - Die Beurteilung der Zufallseffekte erfolgte in den früheren Graphischen Tafeln durch die Angabe einer einzigen Grenze, deren rein zufälliges Überschreiten man ignorierte. Die damaligen Tafeln waren in Weiterführung der früheren deutschen Tradition, die von der "3-Sigma"-Grenze ausging, auf die Irrtumswahrscheinlichkeit 0,27%, d. h. eine statistische Sicherheit von 99,73% ausgerichtet. Inzwischen hat sich aber - je nach der Problemlage - die internationale Entwicklung weitgehend auf die Irrtumswahrscheinlichkeiten 1 % und 5% eingestellt, wenn auch keine förmliche Übereinkunft darüber getroffen wurde. - Da keine gewichtigen Argumente für die Beibehaltung der alten Grenze sprachen, wird nun auch in den Graphischen Tafeln die Umstellung auf die international üblichen Grenzen vorgenommen. So wurde eine völlige Neubearbeitung erforderlich, zu deren Kennzeichnung auch der Buchtitel abgeändert wurde, damit beim Gebrauch der alten und neuen Grenzen keine Mißverständnisse auftreten. Gleichzeitig wurde die Zahl der dargestellten Methoden vergrößert
