Kästner zeigt sich hier von einer völlig anderen Seite als in seinen übrigen Büchern, nämlich als Verfasser fatalistischer Geschichten mit schroffen, aggressiven und zuweilen zynischen Untertönen. Die in den 20er Jahren in Leipziger Journalen veröffentlichten Erzählungen handeln von menschlicher Bosheit, Lieblosigkeit, von Menschen ohne Hoffnung, einem Weihnachtsmann, der, statt Geschenke zu bringen, seinen Gastgeber übers Ohr haut. Im Mittelpunkt steht oft die sich für ihren Sohn aufopfernde Mutter, der, mutterfixiert, durchweg ohne Vater heranwächst. Allenfalls tritt dieser als blasse Kontrastfigur am Rande auf. Nicht wenige Geschichten gehen schlecht aus. Die noch weithin unbekannten Texte sind eine wichtige Neuerscheinung im Kästnerjahr. (Ursula Homann)
