Die Wortschöpfung »Um-Care« drückt aus, dass die Autorinnen mit einer sorgenden Haltung eine Umkehr von Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft anstreben. Eine sorgende Gesellschaft ist nötig, damit Kinder gut aufwachsen können, die Gemeinschaft solidarisch zusammenlebt und Menschen in Würde alt werden können. Sie ist überdies nötig, damit unsere Art zu arbeiten und zu wirtschaften das Leben auf dem Planeten nicht schädigt, sondern dem Erhalt des Lebens und der Lebensgrundlagen dient. Es bedarf eines sorgfältigen demokratischen Diskurses, um die Richtung zur Um-Care zu dieser sorgenden Gesellschaft zu bestimmen. Die Autorinnen machen die unterschiedlichen Denkbewegungen und Strategien hinsichtlich eines neuen Care-Verständnisses sichtbar und veranschaulichen die ethische Bedeutung von Care.
