Inhalt: The Juzgado de Capellanias was the most important fiscal institution within the Roman Catholic Church in Mexico. It operated in each diocese as a type of bank, receiving clerical revenues from various sources and investing them by way of loans at interest. The Roman Catholic Church in Mexico was both a cause and a victim of the political and economic chaos of this period. The liberals alleged that the concentration of much of the country's wealth in the hands of the clerical corporations hindered the political and economic progress of the nation. The clergy argued that they utilized much of their property and capital to the direct benefit of both society and the economy. Dr Costeloe examines these different views in relation to the Juzgado in Mexico. He discusses its complex internal administration, skilled employees, sources of revenue and the procedure for obtaining loans from it. Since the borrower was obliged to guarantee repayment of his loan by offering a property as security, the Church, through the Juzgado as creditor, gained control of the mortgaged property. Dr Costeloe analyses the effects of this investment and subsequent control of real estate via the clergy. In the final section, the author discusses the relations between the Juzgado and the State.

Inhalt: The distinguished German writer Uwe Johnson (1934-1984) lived for several years in the 1960s on Manhattan's Upper Westside. His publisher, Harcourt Brace, had hired him as a textbook editor for their German-language school book editions, which allowed him to stay in New York and also tend to his own writing. In his spare time he got to know his neighborhood very well, observing the goings on in the streets, cafeterias, and parks. In 1968 German Television agreed to coproduce a film with us in which Uwe Johnson would, on-camera, introduce and question the various characters with whom he exchanges news and opinions on his wanderings on the Upper West Side. We proposed to him that he participate in the documentary. Being essentially introverted he was not interested in the on-camera concept, but was willing to make a list of places and situations that he felt should be included in the film. Christian Blackwood took charge of the project. Johnson wrote the narration once the film was edited. It was broadcast in Germany at the time.

Inhalt: This edition of Laforgue's Dernier Vers stems from the editors' critical interest in the poems themselves and from their feeling that Laforgue has not been well represented by anthologies and selections, which have usually placed a wrong emphasis on his earlier, more blatantly decadent work. The twelve poems making up the Derniers Vers, written in 1886, the year before Laforgue's death, were previously thought to be a disconnected series. The editors show that they are, rather, a carefully planned and developed sequence, representing the successful resolution of artistic problems which had occupied the poet during the previous five or six years. To Laforgue, poetry as art, not communication, and throughout his life he had tried to discover a way of writing a poem the impact and character of which would be analogous to painting and music. This edition, prepared for English-speaking readers, will be particularly interest because of the important influence of the poems on Exra Pound, who called Laforgue "the most sophisticated of all French poets," and on T.S. Eliot, who acknowledged that the poetry he wrote in 1908 and 1909 "was directly drawn from a study of Laforgue," "if not quite the greatest French poet after Baudelaire ... certainly the most important technical innovator." The editors have drawn on previously unused manuscripts and papers for their informative and illuminating notes. They have also provided an Introduction which places Laforgue in historical and artistic perspective, and sheds interesting light on those aspects of his personal life which are reflected in his writing.

Inhalt: Katja Mann, wife of German novelist Thomas Mann, recalls their fifty years of marriage and their history both as a couple and independent intellectuals. Born in Germany, the Manns were exiled to the United States during WWII, and returned to Europe after the war, settling in Kilchberg near Zurich. Katja (née Pringsheim) was a witness to all her husband's writing and guarded him from interruptions throughout the years. Thomas Mann's well known literary accomplishments include Buddenbrooks, The Magic Mountain, Death in Venice, Joseph and His Brothers, and Doctor Faustus. In this conversation with Elisabeth von Plessen, Katja and her son Golo describes their life in vivid detail and reveal the background to many of Mann's important writings. Filmed in Katja's home in Kilchberg in 1969.

Inhalt: Known for his large scale environmental installations, Christo continuously redefines the way we interact with art. At times opposed or criticized by the media and community surrounding his projects, Christo remains relentless and steadfast in his work, transforming natural surroundings into something profoundly different. In 1969 Christo traveled to Australia where he wrapped a mile and a half of the continental coastline in mesmerizing synthetic fabric, calling it Wrapped Coast. Whether it be positive or negative, the artist's creations consistently inspire a strong response and encourage us to think about the spaces we occupy and what they mean to our everyday lives.
